glad to hear it isn't a sneaky msn thing.

Two of us here at work using O7 get a network traffic error when trying to get on msn.com

Both of us can get to msn.com with IE...

We've been using O7 for months without too many problems...and thought this was very unusual.

I'll be damned! Same here, I got an error message that said this when I tried to use opera:

"Sorry, due to heavy traffic on the network, the page you're trying to reach is temporarily unavailable.

You can:
Wait a few minutes and try again.
Click your browser's Refresh button now to try reconnecting.
Click your browser's Back button to return to the previous page.

Error type 500 - Server Too Busy"

Then I opened IE, and no problem at all! If the server is to busy, that message should have been shown in IE too, right?? confused

This is weird!

Can't get into msn at all in opera whatever I ID as, but firebird gets in straight away.

Also, I can't get into xbox.com IDing as opera, I just get "sending request..." over and over again, but no actual page. But again, firebird is fine.

the xbox thing is the most blatant of all M$ crap towards Opera. It puts you into an infinite loop if you ID as Opera & they don't even try & hide the fact they're doing this irked

WTF Ian are you using Opera without Opera featuring in the Identstring? If so that must mean MSN are trying real hard to shut out Opera irked irked

What about you? Both sites okay for you?

How perverse... I get the same issue. O7 identifying as Op or IE I get "Sorry try later, server too busy" going to MSN.com. IE sitting right beside it can go in no problem. Refreshing both browsers repeatedly and IE loads everytime, Op shows that every time.

This is pretty pathetic...

edit to add: the fun game to play is visit iding as Op xbox.com and while it goes into it's looping frenzy ctrl-alt-i to id as IE... and strangely enough the loop stops. why do they even bother?

So the war of M$ and Opera has come into a newer phase - before - Hotmail/MSN - were with different html-code and now Opera is totally blocked by them! 2 weeks ago I was able to visit Hotmail/MSN without any limitations, even IDing as Opera. But, I know now that they needed some period of time to implement this bloody feature.

If you absolutly have to go to MSN start at http://my.msn.com/ then sign in....
The problem is with the browser sniffer jawascript.

Opera is NOT singled out!! Nor is Opera included.

So you get re-directed to MSN HELL
aka http://www.msn.com/panehelp.armx

I'm sure that MSN will fix the problem in a month or two lol

16. May 2003, 07:57:33

Does this make any sense-?----I can get in ok every time with 7.03 but never with 7.11

Xbox.com does an eternal loop for me, IDing as MSIE with the opera tag removed makes it work however. I don't have the Opera flagged IE tag anymore so I cannot test it.

msn.com is broke.

I think someone accidently broke something like last time in Microsoft Land.

While the xbox site is in its loop, If you change from IDing as opera to IDing as mozilla, you get this:

??? I can't connect with www.msn.com from my desktop PC running W2K and Opera 7.10 but I *can* connect from my notebook computer, also running W2K and Opera 7.10.

Just noticed that on my PC, the Sun Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.1_01. On my notebook, it's 1.4.1. Don't know if that's significant, but I don't have time to compare the environments in detail. Ah well, I don't normally visit www.msn.com anyway.

I just set up Opera to reload msn.com every second (the error page suggests refreshing). I have images off, though because I don't want MS to get any ad money if I eventually get on. Still, it's a waste of their bandwidth. smile

Good idea I'll do that too. I can leave it on for nights in multiple windows and so on (I think I should turn off transparent proxy - w3cache of my ISP because it can reduce the load or something).

I use Opera 7.10 and hotmail with no problems, but I too get the 'Error type 500' from http://msn.com. Like most everyone here, I don't ever go to msn.com anyhow. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but this stuff REALLY annoys me. (BTW, http://www.xbox.com worked fine for me).

I just sent an email to MSN

Hello,
I just want to say that I think that MSN is the worst portal I have ever visited. I visited msn.com because a friend recommended that I do so. However, every time I attempt to load the site, all I see is a page that says:

****************************************** ************************************************
Sorry, due to heavy traffic on the network, the page you're trying to reach is temporarily unavailable.
You can: Wait a few minutes and try again.
Click your browser's Refresh button now to try reconnecting.
Click your browser's Back button to return to the previous page.

Error type 500 - Server Too Busy
****************************************** ************************************************

The page also contained an image that was linked to the exact same page.

The first time I saw this page, I thought it really was an error. However, I have conferred with certain acquaintances who have told me that msn.com is working properly. Furthermore, I have attempted to reload the page many times without any improvement. I always receive the same page. Thus, I have little choice but to conclude that this is the entire MSN portal.

Please explain to me why anybody would use MSN. I understand that some people are easily amused, but clicking on a picture of a butterfly gets boring pretty fast for just about everyone. Maybe I would like it better if something interesting would happen when I clicked the butterfly. It would be really cool if the butterfly would fly away or something. Also, did it occur to you that people might like your site better if it had some actual content (other than an error message)? I know it sounds difficult, but the vast majority of internet portals are this way.

Thus, I must regretfully inform you that your business strategy is seriously flawed. Because a portal such as yours will inevitably fail unless it is significantly improved, I will provide you with this link where you can purchase bankrupcy software: http://www.freshstart.com/. You'll thank me later.

I hope that my advice has been useful to you. If this is the case, please do not hesitate to contact me about compensating me for my services.

This is really strange, I can access MSN with Opera 6.03 and 7.11 but it's a no go with 7.10! I don't use the MSN portal either but I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen. I can also access xbox with 7.11. I didn't try 7.10 or 6.03.

MSN Incompetence

This message should reveal what's going on, and how you can fix it.

For those who won't bother reading the link, the problem is that the msn.com webserver doesn't handle the Accept Language HTTP header sent by Opera.

Workaround: Open opera6.ini, remove the ";q=1.0", change:

[Adv User Prefs]
HTTP Accept Language=en;q=1.0,no;q=0.9

so that it says

[Adv User Prefs]
HTTP Accept Language=en,no;q=0.9
