espn 360 and yahoo college football sites does not work with opera

espn 360(www.espn360.com) is a service that provides live coverage of different events. The video does not work with opera. In USA, the service is free for verizon dsl customers and might require log in for others.

yahoo college football live scoreboard(gamechannel) also does not work with opera.

I think these two services will affect opera users among college students right at the beginning of this fall football season.

Hope opera consider some action here.

Hi everyone,

I experience similar difficulties with Yahoo! services. On Mac OS X, movies on the main page of Yahoo do not really play. The screen "loading video" is continuously displayed, but the movie does play in the background. Changing user agent does not seem to fix this problem. How can I resolve this issue? The movie tab of Yahoo.com works fine on Linux (Kubuntu) and Windows XP. In the past, movies played fine in opened pop-up windows.

I hope Opera will resolve these issues soon, too.

espn360 and yahoo game channel still does not work with opera. espn360 now supports firefox but not opera. Unless opera make a move on this, it is not attractive to college audience.

Agree...

but what's the *error message* all about ? :

Your internet service provider doesn't carry ESPN360.com, so you are missing out on over 2,500 free live events. Click here to get it now!

... Why

its not an error message. espn360 is a subscription service and anyone can buy it. Also, for some internet service providers like verizon dsl in USA, it is free. thats what it is saying as I mentioned in my first post.

Yahoo GameChannel has worked for me as long as I can remember. Try masking as FF.

I will check it on next saturday during game. But masking is not the choice for such aurdience will not spend a second if it does not work with their browser. Can you verify if you don't get a browser incompatibility warning in this link even with masking using opera9.5beta ?

Correct: With 9.5 beta I got the "browser failed" page.

Masking as FF did not bring up the "failed" page, but it did not load anything.

Masking as IE skipped the "failed" page and brought me to a "loading" page, but GameChannel did not load.

Weird. Maybe that's something different than what I was talking about. When I bring up an NFL game, for instance, I can watch the GameChannel for that game, which is a Java applet. Since there are no games going on right now (MLB, NFL, NCAA), I can't give you an example link.

What's going on here ?...

They are business Partners (ref. announced deals)... Shall we Yahoo search *US college football* on Opera, and then switch to FF to click the links ???

Time to kick butt... really.

Trying to watch the NBA playoffs and this problem continues. The most absolutely irritating thing is the screen that says:

"Our new video player is only available for:

Windows 2000/XP/Vista - Internet Explorer, Firefox
Mac - Firefox, Safari

To watch our Live High Quality videos,
please download and use one of browsers above."

Drives me up the wall when they don't give you a link to allow you to try to load the player anyway. Hey, if it doesn't work, so be it, but at least let me try. I wrote ESPN about this and they said:

"We apologize for the inconvenience. We recommend the following for the
best experience:
<snip>
Browsers: Internet Explorer 6+ and Mozilla Firefox 2.0+"

'Recommend'?? Shouldn't that say "we force you to use one of these browsers and you have no other choice"?

Changing Identify/Mask doesnt help, unfortunately.

very painful experience. This once again shows the real world where marketing plays a significant rule and sometimes more than development, in my view. The name firefox spread so fast that its now getting slowly into the supported browser list.

Hi operafan2006, the new posts of course popped this old thread up to the recently active list so I came across it just now.

I tried ESPN360.com and it loaded a huge Flash-based user interface with video and all, apparently working just fine. When/where/how can I see the stuff that fails in Opera?

Since you didn't include a URL to the Yahoo site I'm not sure where to look - googling took me to http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf , is that correct? Where do I go from there to find the issues?

Hi Hallvors,
thanks for your interest on this.
On espn360.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/espn360/
this shows the same message as posted before: espn360error.png
If you mask as FF, you can get rid of that error page. but it asks for installing some payer or something. But clicking on "install" does not work.

On yahoo sports: This is only visible when a game is ON. When I posted the issue, it was NCAA football season which affect huge college student users. Now there is no football game in USA. It should start in Fall. But I guess, the issue should be same in other sports like basketball(NBA) or baseball(MLB) too.Usually what happened at that time is that if you go to http://sports.yahoo.com/ , then on the lower right you should see scoreboard. then clicking on any live game or clicking the "follow games live on gamechannel" should take you to something like this page. This page apparantly loading fine right now with 9.5latest build. but I can't verify how it will once game is ON.

So, I would suggest that you try to address espn360 issue now and wait for some good time to address yahoo sports gamechannel(that might be already fixed, who knows when yahoo pages beahves how!).

Weird - I still don't get that error. Maybe Verizon customers get a somewhat different site with a more fancy video player and/or more browser sniffing?

I think you are right. Once they detect that you are a subscriber, then they prompt for that plug-in istall thing and do browser sniffing. I will double check this tomorrow from my office connection which is not verizon.

on the right side of the screen, there is scoreboard. Where it shows the running games. Now you will see it is written "add to calender" but during game you will see "game channel" there.

for http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/gamechannel?c=failed (in Opera 9.62)

I get:

In order to use the college football GameChannel, users will need Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher and a Windows operating system.

If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you can check out our NCAAF scoreboard instead.

I get the same thing in Safari 3.2

I was assuming he is following such threads dealing with site issues. you might pm him with link to the response you got(or even forward him the email directly).

previously, I was a strong believer that more users write to webmasters, more helpful it is. Well, that might be still true but I am loosing faith in those webmasters who begins with a narrower view of the world! So, I think direct communication from opera will bring more open the web success than just users. Users efforst are fine but limited to some extent when considering some stubborn big guys like yahoo, google and many more. Hopefully, Hallvors and others will give this second thought in their continued effort. I think opera needs more enthusiastic people like Hallvors who is simply amazing in cracking such cases(at least with prompt browser js fixes!).

masking or identifying as FF gets the player to load, but the video never starts.
