I have tried several distros but always hung on to Ubuntu until I discovered Mint 10. While being based on Ubuntu, Mint 10 is what I have been looking for in linux.

Isn't it pretty much just Ubuntu with some more codecs installed and a different default theme & slightly different set of default apps?

(unless you mean the Debian edition rolling distribution)

Right now I'm using openSUSE 11.4 cuz of the great KDE experience.
I did use debian almost exclusively for 2 years.
But I like the unixness of freebsd.

I suppose I need to update my earlier post ...

After the big mess last year and the forking of Mandriva, I am currently using Mageia 1 (that is to say, the forked version). I will be trying Mandriva 2011 when it is final (they're behind schedule), but expect that I'll stick with Mageia for the time being. Mandriva is trying some new stuff (sort of along the lines of Ubuntu's Unity desktop, from what I can gather) - maybe I'll love it when I see it, but ... well, I'm not expecting to.

I'm quite new to using linux. I'm currently using Linux Mint 11.04 aka Katya. I installed it as a dual boot on my new laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 7. On Windows 7 I installed VMWare Player and inside this virtual machine I have running Puppy. I'm very impressed with both Mint and Puppy. I really prefer the extra workspaces in Mint, for example. I don't think I'd go back to Windows as my default OS up

Mint is a fine distro. Right now I'm using Ubuntu. I want to install OpenSUSE but the live CD doesn't play nice with my wide-screen unless I go into text mode, so that makes me not want to even try to install the full version.

Yeah. Ubuntu is suffering the disease that makes them think that people with big-ass wide-screens want the same type of GUI as people with a handheld device. From the mock-ups, the next version of Firefox will suffer the same affliction (guys, I don't do my computing on a 2 inch screen. I can spare a few pixels)

No widescreen here ... 1280x1024 to be exact. But that's plenty wide. Not that I've seen any reason to use Unity or Rosa on my 1024x600 netbook either.

Yeah. That's what I used to have until that monitor died and I had no choice but to buy a new one. iPhones and Androids don't mean everybody is abandoning the PC. I remember early Windows CE phone. The problem with its interface is that it was trying to use basically the same interface as on desktop PCs; now we're starting to have the opposite issue Unity and Rosa and even now Firefox.

Using Debian Squeeze 6.0.2.1 and loving it.
I used Debian Lenny and PCLinux they were both great distros.
Loved PCLinux 2007 but it did not support git for shared development, it was available but required breaking many other packages I needed for graphics.
I use puppy linux to rescue files from broken windows installs.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with KDE installed. So basically two desktop environments.

I have tried these inside virtualbox

Browser Linux, remastered puppy linux 5.2 which in-turn is based on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
Macpup - I liked it, with enlightenment desktop
Slitaz - Just to check what can be given in 30 mbs
Bodhi Linux - i am beginning to like it. - minimalist approach.

Last night I installed Mint Debian Edition XFCE on a separate partition. Right, it's a toy. Based on Debian Testing, some of its repositories are broken. Overall, it seems faster and lighter then Ubuntu, even running LXDE, though.

My primary work machine, my home laptop and a VPS I use for various things all run on Slackware 13.37. My favourite Linux distros are Slackware and Arch. And while not Linux, I also find FreeBSD quite nice (though sometimes limiting in terms of hardware support).

That said, I also spend a fair amount of time in Ubuntu and Mint because they are so popular with you guys! wink And I also test in a range of other distros on a fairly regular basis (I spent a fair amount of yesterday in Fedora for example).

I use Sabayon 8. It's a rolling release Gentoo-derived distro that uses both binary and source. I like it because it sports the latest software, it's fast, and it comes with some of the software I usually use (like Chromium (when Opera is not working), Gnome Tweak Tools, and GIMP).

Currently:
Slackware 13.37 (no desktop env but independent tools) on laptop,
OpenSuse 12.1 (KDE) on desktop

if the latter does not get better with the next release, especially the quality of KDE, it's gone.

I have used Kubuntu in the past (was my first one) and have experimented with Gentoo for a short time.
Slackware is by far my favourite at the moment, but it's lack of many binary packages and 32bit compatibility are mayor drawbacks.

Debian (testing).

At first I tried several ones for brief periods, and eventually stuck with Ubuntu (6 I guess). Once I made some mess with it (I'm not saying the distro is to blame) and decided to switch to Debian. I've also had Arch linux concurrently for a while, but gave up as I didn't notice performance differences, only different management.

If you want a 32-bit compatibility layer with 64-bit Slack go here:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/multilib/

I'll grant you the binary package selection is slimmer than several other popular distros but Slackware does come with a very complete development environment making building extra software easier than on many distros. Additionally SlackBuilds.org provides a large range of SlackBuild scripts.

For binary packages, AlienBob again has a few interesting packages:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/

Or you could always grab some package from the SalixOS repository:
http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.37/PACKAGES.TXT

I use "Lubuntu", which is the LXDE version of Ubuntu.

It is a lightweight system, that is designed for laptops, & older(slower) computers like mine.
It is completely easy to install, & it is very logical to operate.
I have experimented with various Linux Distros,, but I have settled on Lubuntu, as my personal best.
It is everything I wanted, & I very much enjoy using it every day. There is much to explore, inside Lubuntu.

It includes lots of great "Open Source" software, but does not have Opera.
But not to worry, Opera Browser installs easily, from their site. Opera Browser is even faster, on Linux!
I can customize everything on the deaktop, & set it up to change languages instantly, with just "Control + Space".
(It is compatible with most languages, of the world community.)

I am not a computer expert, but I am learning interesting skills, operating my Lubuntu Linux.

Lubuntu is fast very fast and 12.04 kernel is fast on booting and shut down than 11.10.

Both LXDE and XFCE (my favourite) can be used on full fledged desktops. They are not restricted to poor mans desktop's, though they are designed keeping in mind older hardware.

And yes, even end users can use it for day-2-day tasks.

I use :
openSUSE (Desktop, server, laptop)

What I have used :
SuSE Linux (Desktop)
Maemo/MeeGo (Smartphone)
Debian (Used it for a month last fall due to hardware failue in my primary rig)

What I used to use, non Linux :
OSOL 2009.06
eComstation
OS/2

I must say that the SUSE stuff always have had a special place in my heart. I have done some distribution surfing, but never found anything quite right and always ended back home in SUSE-land.

The only time I even considered deserting, was back when I tried Open Solaris - but Oracle fecked it up.

The server is headless and on the laptop I use KDE, but I seldom use that one. On the desktop I use openBox with Razor-Qt.
