Are you saying Ubuntu to a pain is the ass? You might want to "shop around" as it were. There are plenty of other distros to choose from.

Love that distro. I especially like how it comes with all the proprietary-yet necessary stuff like flash10 pre-installed.

eswaran45, Ubuntu 8.04 is kind of old, 9.04 is already out.
I'm pretty sure Canonical stopped supporting it a year ago.
I suggest updating to the newest Ubuntu version.

8.04 is a Long Term Support release, supported for, I think, 3 years on desktop and 5 on server

@eswaran: Firefox hanging, what?
I'm afraid this is off-topic and you should ask on the Ubuntu Forums.

I used to have Ubuntu 9.04 installed, but after getting 8GB of ram I switched to Linux Mint 64 Gloria. My other computer is dualboot with Linux Mint / Windows XP.

I'm currently using Kubuntu Jaunty (9.04) with KDE 4.3. Used Mandriva and OpenSuSE before, but I like Kubuntu much more 'cause it's not overloaded with extra software stuff for setting up, you know?
And I need to use Windows for my music recording stuff. ATM it's Windows Vista HB and Windows 7 RC1.

Ubuntu 9.04 on desktop.

Ubuntu 8.04 on rather old feeble laptop. I use the LXDE desktop to give it a chance to work at reasonable speed without freezing.

I use Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope, Debian 4,5, before Red-Hat and Mandriva. Ubuntu is the best distro.

Eeebuntu+LXDE on the Eee1000, Ubuntu 9.04 on the x86 desktop. The desktop was the first time I ever tried a distro and ended up continuously using it without feeling like maintaining it and tweaking it was a life-consuming hobby. Now I just *use* the computer, and I've finally completely and permanently ditched Windows with confidence. (Ok, so I got a little Wine going on, but still..no dual-boot!)

Eeebuntu on my Eee netbook w/Opera is awesome, btw.

After trying several distros I settled on OpenSuSe for my desktop.
Though my laptop does seem to like Ubuntu the best.

In the 90's I started with Red Hat. Then I moved on to Fedora and Knoppix. Eventually I ended up on Distrowatchdotcom and I went nuts! I tried almost everything on the list. I settled on Ubuntu. It's not bad, I like it.

I've trying several distros
(K)ubuntu 8.04
ubuntu 9.04
openSuSE 10x 11x
Gentoo
Mandriva '08 '09
not so much to say "i've tried almost everything"

now I choose openSuSE with KDE4 . very stable system, ease to set up it it allows you to do anything with it the way you like: manually writing config files or using Yast.
I use it at home and at work and like it)
all I can say about other systems I've tried, and was tolled about Gentoo - is the way to build smth fast and clear. There will be only what you need and nothing else. I have it at work and "having some fun" with it on a free time.

My desktop is running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit and I love it.

My ancient laptop is running Ubuntu netbook remix (soon to be switching to Jolicloud and/or Haiku)

When I can afford it my phone will be running Maemo 5. smile

22. September 2009, 16:51:25

One desktop running Ubuntu 9.04, one running Linux Mint 7 (mostly for guests and other people expecting things to "just work"), Fedora 11 on one laptop, PCLinuxOS 2009 on other laptop, and Debian Lenny on other box. I also tend to test out other distros on one box, but mostly these for now, as they are simplest at getting things setup, and arranging network Shares (Samba), and handling media files.

A special mention also to Blag Linux, and gNewsense, both distros built using ONLY Free Software, no binary blobs or non-free firmware at all. Both have run excellently on my hardware, and go to prove just what Free Software is capable of offering us. smile

It's mainly used by my wife and she loves it.
Anything techy needed doing on it is my job though. wink
