Hmm, I was thinking about gathering up a list of all the "popular" and frequently ask questions and suggestions and make an unoffical FAQ, what do you guys think? Might cut down on people asking the same questions over and over again.

Thank you for the download link list. The guide how to rename versions is good as well and I hope that OM folks allow it. However, OM team has also offered us a possibility to download renamed "Opera Mini 3":

What comes to your suggestion to gather up an unofficial FAQ, well, it is simply a great idea. Should we discuss first how to do that? In case if you want other people to suggest topics for you? As an author, you should of course have the final word to decide what questions and answers comes on that list.

Edit: BTW, are there already different versions for OM4? I have version 4.0.9751.

Yup, there seem to be coming newer builds all the time - this is why, in general, don't provide direct JAR links in my articles, but advise going to the download page.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I updated my original post with the new info concerning the 3.1 rename and also removed the basic links from Opera Mini 4 and the betas. Also I'll make a new thread concerning the FAQ so we can discuss the idea and hash out what we should add to it.

Great stuff, Slynderdale! A question that occurs to me........I've occasionally found websites which decline to load because they don't recognise OM3.1. Would this renaming procedure allow us to rename OM3.1 as, say, Firefox, thus fooling recalcitrant websites into allowing access?? I'm using a SE P900i, by the way.

No, websites recognize browsers by user agent (HTTP header User-Agent), which, in this case, is sent by Opera servers.

Direct download links are asked every now and then on several threads. Therefore I think it is okay to 'bump' this. However, I agree that especially newbies seem to ignore almost all kind of topic titles and they do not bother to search first. I have done the same error. There are however, those forum members that are in stage of becoming more active. For those members it can be usefull if topics like this are easily accessible on first forum page.

It is also wished several times that this topic could be made as a 'sticky' message. There is however a negative side on this. If there are very many sticky messages on the forum front page, people become annoyed because they have to scroll a lot. Also really important sticky messages become ignored because there are too many of them.

Therefore I suggest that moderator could make only one 'sticky' message for topics suggested by forum members. This topic could be titled something like this: "Usefull threads for newbies, experts and helpers". Then under that message there could be a list of titles and links to all those threads that forum members have asked to be set as 'sticky' messages.

Yup.

Now that my additional, very important OpMini hacks (see the direct invocation from other apps) seem to be finalized, I'll publish a greatly rewritten OM4 install tutorial (for WM users); then, I can "retire" the old MIDlet Bible. I'll also include these download links.

Hope the OpMini folks also chime in and tell us what they think

As stated, I'm ready to write the new tutorial in such a way that the thread title also contains "direct download links" or whatever, if the OM folks want to minimize the number of sticky threads.

It'd be nice to know why I even need the direct links now. Throughout the entire life-cycle of the v3 series of Opera Mini, I was able to get each updated build just fine by going to www.operamini.com in my phone's built-in WAP browser. Now, ever since v4, when I do that I get "Page Cannot Be Displayed". It's been like that since the v4 betas. Nothing has changed on my phone since, it's strictly related to Opera Mini v4.

If it weren't for this thread, I would've never gotten Opera Mini 4 on my phone.

@ Serola: Perhaps you could include a reason for the update? An abbrieviated changelog, so to speak, touching on the major points.
For example, if this update deals with Nokia issues and I have a Moto or LG, then I don't need to d/l this. Btw, where is the official blurb where this info is released?

Sorry for missing reasoning. Update sent only because that is the subversion available for mobile downloads at operamini.com. For some unknown reason this is not available for PC download. I found about this on another thread and decided to mention it here as well. There is no official explanation or source for this release. it was obviously found by another user who has downloaded OM4 via mobile browser during holidays.
