i recommend an external tool like proxomitron.
it has more elaborate rules and is browser independent (so you can use it also with firefox, a browser without cache bugs)
moreover, it can modify markup. e.g. I remove the google's "sponsored links" with a regular expression :-D.
there are many people maintaining this tool.
look here http://www.proxomitron.info/
the downside: it is harder to maintain, you have to edit the filter configuration file of find a good one in the forums.
i prefer to slam down any banner by hand (editing the filter config file).
there are also alot of "metering" sites that will do silent requests that cannot be "clicked away" as they have no banner.
proxomitrons "http message log" will reveal these
cheers, csp

Also downside of any ad filtering is that you might get carried away and keep blocking everything. Sometimes it cause site not working as expected. Numerous issues if such kind reported in this forum(at least I saw few on admuncher).

Yes, if you're going to be doing adblocking, you'll want to make sure you can disable it temporarily (here is where my wish for site specific cache clearing comes in) to make sure you report the bug in the *right* place. I'm currently trialing Sidki's set and enjoying it, but it will be awhile before I change up my blog re what filterset to use.

er, 9.5 already does that(site prefs content menu).... worth a try, to get *lots* of good stuff, including less resource usage and faster running....
and when you use the content blocker, some
is needed - If the page has loaded, then rightclick, ' block content, details' will show the active filters, or you can go to tools, prefs, advanced, content to check the list...
and when you use the content blocker, some
