Opera Mini 4 & Windows Mobile 6 (HTC S720)

Does Opera Mini support Windows Mobile 6? When I try to download it OTA, All I get is "This file cannot be viewed on the device.

I don't see my phone on the supported list, but many of the HTC's have the same OS, so I assumed it "could" work...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ronag,

Welcome to the forum!

Your handset will run Opera MIni 4, provided you first install a compatible Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Scroll up to the top of the forum page and read Menniesys' excellent article on this. All you need to know is there.

Good luck, and enjoy OM - its the greatest mini-browser ever!

George

Thanks the replies....

I read the thread that kiwi47 suggests. Its a very comprehensive post covering all kinds of JVM topics, benefits, uses, etc. The problem I'm having is I can't find a straight forward "install this JVM" then install Opera Mini. While I don't mind doing some work & digging, I'm having trouble finding clear instructions for locating an appropriate JVM.

I've got the same issue with trying to install Opera on my HTC S720. I don't see where to download a JVM for my phone.

Can someone help please?

There's a lot to digest at the thread that covers JVMs. (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=210354). But after breezing through it, I'm still not clear on what JVM will run on my phone or where to download it.

I'm not interested in gaming. I just want to run Opera Mini on my phone.

Any direction would be appreciated.

Hi Menneisyys,

I just downloaded and installed that file onto my phone. When go to www.operamini.com and download Opera Mini 4, I get further in the installation, but "Esmertec Jbed MIDP 2.0" reports "File Error (???).

Any ideas?

The same error occurs for both Opera Mini 3 and 4.

UPDATE (04/16/2008): In the meantime, the last-recommended defcomg version has turned out to be buggy; for example, if you install it on a storage card, it’ll still store the deployed files in \Windows\appdb - that is, the main storage. Furthermore, some people have reported (see for example THIS and THIS) it to be incompatible with Opera Mini 4.1 beta (it worked on my Wizard tho) – which isn’t the case with the previously-recommended Ebenezer version. Finally, it can’t be installed on a storage card NOT named Storage Card – that is, on a, say, non-English device or into an alternate Flash memory like “Storage” or “Flash disk” in the Ranju WM6.1 version v7.6 for the HTC Universal.

Therefore, you’ll want to switch back to the Ebenezer version available HERE (requires registration at XDA-Devs) or HERE (direct download from my DB back-end) if you encounter these problems and want to keep your deployed MIDlets on your card. Again, note that you will need to manually create (copy) a shortcut to Jbed.exe with this version – this is the only problem with it. It runs (the signed version of) Opera Mini 4.1b (and, of course, all the other compatible MIDlets, including games) just great.

That did it. Opera Mini 4 is now running on my HTC S720. Thank you!

How do I do that? (Sorry, the Windows Mobile world is new to me.)
