Opera Mini 4.1 beta available for testing!
We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.1. You can download it from http://www.operamini.com/betaHere are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.0:
- Download and upload files directly in Opera Mini
- Save pages for offline browsing
- Autocompletion when entering addresses directly
- Find in page
- Increased server speed during the last months
- Signed versions of Opera Mini
Please be aware that the first two features require JSR-75 support on your handset. Far from all handset support this, and it can also be turned on/off in the JVM or by the service provider.
We have now chosen to sign Opera Mini with Verisign and Thawte, and we will provide four different versions on our download server: Double signed (both Verisign and Thawte), Verisign, Thawte, and unsigned. The advantage of the signed version is that you can change permission settings to less restrictive permissions. The end result is that you will get fewer permission dialogs for e.g., file and network access.
We encourage you all to try the signed versions first, unless you have Palm OS or BlackBerry, and if none of them work on your phone, download the unsigned version. By trying to start a signed version, your phone will send some useful feedback to our servers which we will use later.
We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our feedback thread.
Known issues
As this is a beta, there are bound to be some known issues. Here's a list of some:
- There are problems with entering address directly on some phones. If you experience this problem, please go to settings and disable "Direct address input".
- Palm OS and BlackBerry can't use Opera Mini with certificates.
- BlackBerry devices with firmware older than 4.2 can't start this beta version. The firmware can be found in "Options -> About" on line #3.
- Direct image download doesn't work, but will open in your native browser.
What is JSR-75?
JSR-75 is an optional package for J2ME (this is very technical, meaning it can be included in the Java on your phone) which allows Opera Mini to access the file system on your phone. By accessing the file system, Opera Mini can download and upload files without going through the phone's native browser. JSR-75 is also used when saving pages.
Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

There seem to be an issue going on where only unsigned version let you use file managing on some phone models. This can be caused because the phone's firmware is out of date.

I have this problem too on my nokia 6300 while saving mp3. If I save other files then save dialog box appears. But if I select "save" then "Error. Invalid filename" alert appears.

The series 60 permissions have been mentioned several times already. Just use App. Manager, Highlight Opera Mini 4.1, press Options and then select Suite Settings.
That's not the case with several S60 models like the Nokia N95. On them, go to Applications / App. Manager, scroll down to Opera Mini 4.1, press Action, Open and change all occurrences of "Ask every time" (file system read/write operations, that , is, "Read user data" and "Edit user data", will belong to this category) to "Always allowed". Then, just exit by pressing the right softkey two times.
BTW, it's also here that you may want to change "Ask first time" to "Always allowed" of "Connectivity" and "Network access" so that, after loading, you aren't nagged for network access permission at all.

its only downside is the upload download feature.its not working for me.the data transfer is taking place but the uploading does not occur.hope it'll be solved in future releases

But that's not why I posted, but because of the hard input of entering a url in E6 (touchscreen), you have to tap on Menu - Enter address ... !? ... you have to go down, Tap on Insert Symbol, then click OK (keypad) ... enter the page address, Ok, and then click again Ok on keypad...
Phew, it takes a lot of time!!!

Edit: This is about the direct input thing, please file a seperate bug about the upload issue. Also, you can disable direct URL input from the settings page, would probably work better in your case.

It's surprising how easy it is to forget that OM 4.1 is a signed Midlet and I don't have to grant it temporary permission every time I start it up. It's good!
I have to say that the auto complete function is a little fiddley to use on the W960i but that is no surprise because everything is fiddley on the W960i with the disasterous UIQ interface. In the address line if I enter the first "w" of "www", the next "ww" is automatically added on to form "www". Ok so far. The problem on the W960i is moving on from that to enter the next part of the URL. Tapping any other key will replace the auto completed "ww" with whichever character key you pressed. To move on and enter the next characters you need to get the stylus out, tap the address line to confirm the entry of "www." then go back to the key pad and enter the URL.
Although as I've said I am not in the least bit surprised that the W960i is so inconsistant and inefficient in this respect, it does mean that I prefer to leave auto complete switched off because it does not make anything any easier, unfortunately quite the opposite.

I am enjoying Opera mini 4.1 Beta for 3 days now. It's the best to date! Wasn't this happy with the 4.0! Never faced any issues till now after some 56 hours of browsing.
I have an E51 which I believe is a phone with JSR-75 (S60-3rd edition). But as said in the starting post, it is not yet functional it seems.
Overall, very good effort from OM team,
Keep it up!

Yes, Opera Mini does it pretty good, you guys from Opera are great, thanks a lot.
I had a problem yesterday night with 4.1B, I entered in My.Opera and I had 2 comments pending to read and when I clicked on every one of them, Opera Mini 4.1B downloaded the commment partially, like (downloading 2 of 9 KB) and stopped with blank web page, it didn't finish downloading, so I had to stop, back and load the comment again, then it loaded it correctry. Then, the second message, and it happened again, so I had to stop again, back, an load it again.
So the first time Opera Mini 4.1B doesn't load my pending message, I have to stop, back and load again.
Do I need to use the bug report wizzard ? I'll do it if you think it's necesary.

That emulator doesn't support good JSR-75 implementation. So, few of new nice features of Opera Mini BETA doesn't work.

1. Opera 4.1 beta still unable to load a page which contains a lot of images. I have used the setting high quality image and mobile view. If a page size is near about 1MB with the images then the images are not showing properly and many images are not loaded.
2. The exit time of opera mini 4.1 beta increases near about 3 seconds. while I tried to exit from the opera mini beta it takes too long time from the stable 4.0 version.
I used Nokia 5700 with 512 MB card and opera mini 4.1 beta with multi signed version for testing purpose. Need to improve these things in the final release.

I guess it will be fixed in Opera Mini 4.1 final.

I understood that once OM hangs you are using the shortcut feature to end the application.
Now when you go to OM again, what exactly happens?
Does it actually just start to reinstall?

Here we have an old problem familar from Opera Mini 4.0: "Installing" at startup after using OM4 for couple of times?
In short: OM4+ should be closed only using "Menu>Exit". I believe Opera Mini team has acknowledged this as a bug, they are aware of it, but probably they still don't know solution for that. The problems start when you do something that "kills" the process before you have time to exit properly. But what to do? All that can be done at the moment is to get rid of the bugs that crash OM4.1beta. So, please report all cases when OM4.1beta get stuck. Consider to fill in the bug report for each separate case. For example fill in the bug report for cases when saving many pages per session causes the crash etc.

Good to know, thanks Lunkwill
