LDAP support
First of all, I am extremely impressed with the M2 mail client. I'm evaluating new mail clients now to use for work, and I believe that the view capabilities in M2 could really increase my productivity. It's refreshing to finally see someone invent a new (and improved) type of email client. However, the lack of LDAP lookup support rules M2 out of list for now. With thousands of email addresses in a corporation, including both users and group alias, LDAP lookups have been invaluable to us with other clients, such as Netscape/Mozilla, Outlook and Evolution.
It might not be so bad if there was a way sychronize (or import) a contact list with an external application, but that's not available either.
Please consider LDAP lookup support in future versions of M2.
thank you,
Dan Anolik
LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It's an IETF standard protocol with many different server and client side implementations.
It's used by many corporations for a variety of things including (but not limited to) account management. Various applications, and most UNIX operating systems can actually authenticate through LDAP. Microsoft's Active Directory is even a somewhat compatible version of LDAP.
More relevant to email clients however, is that LDAP is often used as the master directory of account information. Email clients such as Outlook, Netscape/Mozilla, Eudora, Evolution and others can query LDAP for address lookup. It works similar to the way that Opera uses it's internal contact list, except that the LDAP directory is shared from a server, has everyone in your enterprise, and is theoretically kept up to date.
For more information, check out:

or look at Netscape/Mozilla for a very nice implementation of an LDAP friendly email client.

I also use LDAP server in my company for company wide e-mail address book. I requested LDAP in early stages of M2. I think that it is time to implement "LDAP Version 2" and "LDAP Version 3" protocol support in M2.Ertan Kucukoglu

LDAP support would be of great help for me to introduce Opera (and M2) as a viable alternative to MS products.
As it is now the mail client is to weak and our managment prefere integrated solutions.
So please, LDAP support would be great!

LDAP support
Support for LDAP lookup is a must-have feature to use M2 in corporate environments. But keep in mind that the LDAP server might be busy/slow/down. So, it would be nice not to lookup in LDAP for auto-complete function but only in (Active) Contacts. Maybe, let the user force a LDAP lookup with a keyboard shortcut (Alt-K, like in Outlook).
Also, if users expand group aliases, the To field may contains hundreds of email addresses. It's maybe better not to add all these email addresses in (Active) Contacts without the user confirmation in order to keep the Contacts list small and usable. IMHOM2.LDAP=YES for me too!
I inderstand the decision to dedicate development resources towards another technology isn't taken lightly, but with all the attention LDAP's getting in this thread, the investment would be well received. M2 might even knock off Outlook, etc., in some organizations.
For what it's worth, I think it's great in most other ways, guys.EM
...just to keep this thread alive:
YES, please get LDAP working. It would be a very nice and important add-on to transform M2 from "a mailer" to "a comfortable mailer with cherry on top".
There is an entry in the knowledge database saying they are "planning to support LDAP, but it is not yet implemented." The entry is from 2002...

Opera - because it's the only way to appreciate the net.
If they added LDAP support to the Opera, I could stop using Microsoft Outlook at work. The company is too big to use an email client without LDAP support.
It would also simplify things for me because we have some newsgroups at work, but I can't read them in Outlook. So, right now I have Outlook for my IMAP mail, Outlook express for newsgroups and Firefox for web browsing. if they added LDAP support to Opera, I could replace all of those programs with the Opera and be done with it. It's pretty much a must have feature for an email client.

+100... I prefer to keep everything in one internet app at work, but currently have to start up thunderbird just to send e-mail to someone when I don't know their address.

I would like LDAP support too, but this is one of the "either you really need it, or you don't need it at all" features, so right now I would prefer improvements that benefit (most) everyone and make sure that the LDAP support, when it comes, will be a good one.
This sig <a href="http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1132152">intentionally broken</a> by My Opera devs...
ldap would be very nice - even home users could benefit from it very much.

This seems to be the attitude about most requests to include (arguably) ordinary features that would bring M2 inline with other e-mail clients. It's humbling to see a statement that may reveal that M2 was never meant to compete, but was included only as a convenience.

+1 I've been using LDAP for years as an online addressbook and am quite frustrated that it is on of those little gems that has not been implemented. I wouldn't even think of using M2 without it.
OTOH it has to be said that there is also no way to implement it properly without using a custom schema (such as MozillaABperson, which is far from complete) and that all LDAP-capable clients (Outlook, Mozilla, Evolution) seem to have their own way to using and displaying attributes.

I came here to add a wishlist item for LDAP, and discovered this thread. Nice to see others have already thought of that and that I'm not alone. I use Opera all the time, especially at work, where we have an LDAP (which I administer) with approximately 75,000 users. I would prefer to not always have to query it manually to find the contact information for people I need to reach.
It certainly won't make me stop using Opera (nothing short of the company folding, leading to an end of browser development, would). However, it's one of those missing features which, now that I notice it's not there, is constantly bugging me.

c'mon Opera - a google search reveals that this has been asked for the past 4-5 yrs. I like Opera and I'm getting used to M2 but I can't use it without LDAP support. Surely that isn't too difficult to implement.
I sure would like to know what the hold up is seeing I invested so much time figuring out how to do things with m2 compared to TB and Seamonkey. Anyhow, I've tried Opera about 8 times over the past 7 yrs and there is always something that is lacking. I like the fact that it is fast and light but I guess there is a reason for that - it's lacking critical features.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add LDAP support!

I'll bet you that you won't see it another 4-5 years either.
Aside from basic maintenance, security fixes and useability improvements, no solid e-mail features have been added since it was first introduced in 7.0.
If M2 doesn't meet you needs now, it would be best to assume it never will. This isn't the only common feature found in most common e-mail programs that has been ignored for 4-5 years. Which is a shame, a few basic features like this could have made it the best free mail program available.

For those who want a temp solution till LDAP is fully supported, download this very small and handy (free) utility which I used to import all my contacts from my Yahoo address book into Opera
