New Digg Comment System Crashes Opera

Testing latest beta, but also reported with 9.27. Opening an article comments page on the newly redesigned Digg.com site crashes the browser back to desktop.

Confirmed as well.

OS X 10.5.2 9.50b build 4789

Thursday, 15. May 2008, 21:50:44

I hate it when people say this but: it works fine here in the newest snapshot. XP SP2

PS - The new digg look is pretty ugly.

EDIT:
Wait a second, it does crash, but NOT when I go to a comment page from my iGoogle (through the digg gadget). Strange.

So.... confirmed, kind of, I guess.

Just popped in to say that the new Digg comment system didn't work on 9.26 either. I thought updgrading to 9.27 would fix it, but was wrong. My OS is Vista.

Well has anyone reported this to Digg as well already? I didn't try pulling up the comments in the thread that notified about the new comment system on an alternate browser to see if anyone mentioned it not working on digg there.

Maybe it's something easy that digg could fix too.

I've posted a bug report to Digg regarding this issue. I'm running 32bit Vista and using Opera 9.27. It crashes every time I go to a digg page with comments. I got the classic (automatic?) reply from Digg.

Thanks for getting in touch with us regarding this issue.

We’re working hard to correct it and apologize for any inconvenience you’ve experienced.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions.

It seems that turning JavaScript off helps. Check it, maybe it'll be temporary workaround for this bug

EDIT - Sorry for what i will do now

Temporary Workaround (FIX):
Turn JavaScript OFF for digg.com in Site Preferences

Saturday, 17. May 2008, 00:47:40

Yeah turning off JS helps, but you can only see parent comments, it's better than crashing though :-/ Hope this is fixed soon, I hate opening up Firefox just to browse Digg, makes me appreciate Opera that much more.

I can confirm this too, when i first went to the site after the new comments system was put in place, the page would load, the comments would appear and then suddenly the comments would all roll up to the top of the screen, i thought it was because you had to logon first, so i logged on and then suddenly Opera crashed on me. Now, when i go to the site, opera will still crash if i hang around for long enough, and it at least gives me the option to display the comments but when i click on it, nothing happens.

I am running Opera 9.27.8841 on WinXP Pro with SP3.

Having my favorite browser not play well with one of my favorite news sites is heartbreaking.
Heartbreaking I tell you!

I don't think it should be digg's responsibility to fix; that's just supressing symptoms while the disease remains.

Crash confirmed on Linux version as well [Mandriva], Opera 9.27

There's a bug report filed in Opera's BTS (I'm sure crashlogs from inspectr were attached too) so hopefully Opera can track down the issue and fix the crasher (disease) on the next maintenance release.

Confirmed crash - Opera 9.50b - Win XP SP2

Also have a look at the top menu bar logo etc...

Its understandable for smaller websites to have these small design/alignment issues but for a massive site like digg.com it doesn't make sense to me. Takes about 5 mins to fix.

No website should crash Opera, or any other browser for that matter this easily.

I think it goes without saying it killed my Opera too. I noticed it on my comp at work yesterday and that machine has always been a bit weird so I didn't think much of it, just figured I needed a restart.

Then I saw the digg thread on it a few minutes ago. Yes, there are a lot of douchebags hating on Opera over there.

Is it really Digg's fault here? I mean sure they could have or should have tested it before going live, but it crashes EVERY (modern?) version of Opera, on apparently ANY OS. It crashes on 32bit and 64bit xp and vista, in Tiger and Leopard, saw someone say it killed Opera in Ubuntu, crashes Opera on Wii, and even confirmed it crashes Opera Mini on a blackberry.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with Digg here or Opera?

Regardless of how the Digg page is coded, Opera should not crash -- that's why a bug has been filed in Opera's BTS; crashers get high priority so it will be fixed.

That said, it's quite obvious that Digg devs didn't even test with Opera, otherwise they would have experienced the crasher, a bug could have been filed earlier in Opera's BTS and probably a new Opera 9.28 would be out by now (meaning that Digg users using Opera wouldn't be annoyed, Digg devs wouldn't be posting here and looking for a solution, etc).

DOES NOT CRASH FOR ME o_o

Version: 9.50 beta
Build: 9945
Platform: Win32
System: Windows NT 6.0 (AKA Windows Vista)

It still crashes for me on Opera 9.26, though.

Update: It just crashed on me when I went to one of the comment. It crashes, but not at all the comments pages.

Monday, 19. May 2008, 06:19:33

Digg is no longer crashing for me, but not all of the functionality is there (viewing comment replies, digging/burying comments etc.).

It's been crashing for me too since the comment system update. It's ok though, I've been needing something to help me break the digg addiction and now I've been digg free for 5 days!

We at digg have a fix for this issue that we're going to be pushing to the live site very shortly. If anyone @ Opera wants to talk to me about what caused the error, I'd love to let them know what we found.

I sure wish I worked at Opera. I'd love to hear the explanation. Perhaps there's an executive summary that goes into a hair more detail than "Some bad javascript" but less than "Here's how you build the exploit..."

Very pleased to see digg responding to this so quickly.

How soon exactly is "shortly" because it's still crashing.

Are you even from digg?

Anyone tried going into the thread about this on digg with an alternate browser to see if there really is a fix coming soon?

Both fixes are happening.
Opera fixed the exploit that allowed the system to crash. The fix is in their nightly builds, will make it out on Opera's next release (presumably)
Digg fixed the JS code that was exploiting the bug in opera. The fix will go out with the next release of digg. This way people with current (non-nightly) builds of Opera will still be able to use digg.

Not digging, digg now crashes on the front page for me. Anyone else having the same problem?

Edit: Its crashing when you change opera to mask as internet explorer for digg.com. Masking as IE fixes the problem with digg where you have to click back multiple times. Digg and opera do not get along..
