Modding Sony Ericsson phones

This thread is for tips & tricks how to modify Sony Ericsson phones. SE shortcuts are the easy way but there are also third party applications that can be used for changing menu texts and functionalities. One obvious one people probably would like to do is change the Internet button to start JAVA midlets like Opera Mini. So, folks, please do share your knowledge wink

Do you mean modding? Well, I'm against software mods but not against application modding or open source programming. Software mods jeopardise the hard work made by programmers.

But yes, a word of warning is needed.

Fellow Sony Ericsson users. Modify your phones in your own risk. You quite likely lose your right for warranty by doing so.

What in your terms is an application modding.
I am asking this just to make sure that i dont come up with things that are not welcome.

I really hope I don't need to become a despot around here, but for example Opera Mini mods are not welcome topic. However, discussion on using software for changing the features of phones is okay.

So, the link to that one interesting post I found at Esato: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=153990

Using XS++ you not only edit menus by also change the functions of menu options. There's currently XS++ 3.1 out there.

So you think installing halmer certificate and signing applications with halmer is ok here?

Why not. I don't exactly know what halmer certificate is but if the idea is to modify your phone so that you can get rid of permission guestions, then it's okay. But once again it is a good idea to warn folks and say they may risk their phones security when doing so.

By using FAR manager you actually break into your File System(FS) by brute force and you have to reflash your phone to get it working, thereby making your warranty void. But XS would not require a reflash. Anyway its better to step into modding only if you are ready to risk your warranty becoming void.

Although OM is signed by verisign and thwate, some people may not have those certificates on their phones, especially the branded ones.
Now there are two ways to get rid of the annoying Java permissions.
1. We can put in the Halmer certificate into the phone and sign OM with that certificate.(takes a long time and you have to sign each midlet you want to use, hence i dont recommend this)
2. We can apply a patch to remove the java permissions altogether.(This is by far the best way, no signing, hardly takes 5 min)

Here is a simple tutorial about using halmer for signing.

This is a clean tutorial on How to add files(halmer certificate) into FS using XS++.

Here is the tutorial on applying patches with setool2 lite.

Here you can look for the remove 'java permissions patch' in the list of patches for your phone.

(dont have to register for downloading, just need to translate the page, dont know why the translated link doesnt work irked )
Here you can download setool2 and XS++

I'm not sure if it's okay to give ready-made jad & jar files. One reason is that version 4.1.11320 may turn out to be old after a while and people also may like to get OM in their native language. How-to instructions should be enough. But like I told before, I also consider this as "phone-modding". Changing the certificate or icon should be okay, I guess confused
