Internet Channel New Features FAQ
This topic is to address Frequently Asked Questions about new features for the Internet Channel for the Wii. Hopefully this will reduce repetitive questions. Hopefully the mods will make it a sticky.1)When will they add *generic feature*?
New features are determined by Nintendo, which has historically not been receptive to user demands (such as 1080p support). However. Opera can and does make suggestions to Nintendo, which might be receptive to them if they were cost-effective (ie. free).
2) Can I download *stuff*?
The Wii only has 88MB of RAM to work with. It has 512MB of Flash memory, but that is used for saved games and Virtual Channel storage.
Nintendo has stated that they will not allow downloads due to piracy and hacking concerns.
3)It says I ran out of space?
Try resetting from the Home Menu, and then go directly to the URL. If you don't want to retype the whole thing save it to your Favourites first.
4)Can I make suggestions?
Yes! Post them in this forum and hopefully Opera will pass it on to Nintendo.
5)What suggestions have been made?
*Updated Flash Player*-The Wii is custom hardware, and does not run Windows or Linux. A SDK (Software Developer Kit) is needed. Adobe does not have a Flash Player 8 or 9 SDK. However, on March 31 2008 Adobe released Flash Lite 3.1, which has partial support for Flash 8 and 9. In May, Adobe announced they will no longer charge licensing fees for Flash players on CE applicances like the Wii.
Further out, Adobe has announed Adobe Air, a next generation player that supports Flash 10 and PDF files.
*PDF support*-This is currently unlikely due to the large resources needed. It may be possible with Adobe Air.
*Clock on Home Menu*-This is possible with support from Nintendo.
*Saved typed text*-Ever typed a long message, only to have it lost when a "Internet connection lost" bubble popped up? This happened to me twice when I was typing out this FAQ.
*Selected text used to enter address*- Ever selected a URL and then clicked the "WWW" button thinking it would input the URL for you? Easily doable and intuitive.
*Cut and Paste*-Easy to do, but space dependent. Would need keyboard shortcuts/wiimote shortcuts, or new menu buttons.
*Higher resolution*-Unfortunately, Nintendo chose not to use 1080p. Your best option is to purchase the Nintendo Component Video cables. It'll make your games look better too.
*Select and delete typed text*-Very useful for long messages (like this one).
*Minimizable screen keyboard*-An option to minimize the onscreen keyboard would be nice. It would also have a bigger text area, which would make editing long messages useful.
*Editable 404 page URLs*-Right now you can click on the "i" button and edit the address if you typed it in wrong. If you press the "WWW" button you have to retype the whole thing again. Not very intuitive.
*Keyboard navigation*-Wouldn't it be great to be able to use PageUp/PageDown, as well as Home and End for large data entry and surfing large pages?
*More bookmarks*-Since the bookmarks are stored on the Flash memory of the Wii, it is possible to add a lot more. Multiple pages may be needed in order to avoid excessive scrolling.
*Improve Internet speed/connectivity*-Unfortunately, the best way to do that is to purchase a USB Ethernet adapter, and use a wired Internet conmnection. It is much faster and reliable. Also, you don't have to worry about losing in Mario Kart due to a dropped connection.
*MPEG/Realplayer/Other plugin support*-Since Flash is the most commonly used plugin, it is the only one currently supported. It is up to Nintendo to adopt these plugins, but once again licensing becomes an issue.
*Tabbed browsing*-Since Opera was the first to integrate tabbed browsing, it may seem strange not to include it. However, tabbed browsing is perhaps too resource intensive.
*Use tabs for forms*-If you've every had to log in, or sign up for something, you know how annoying it is to have to click and type your way through a form. Using the Tab key along with a minimizable onscreen keyboard would very apprciated.
Hopefully this has been helpful to you. I will add more suggestions in the future.

The Wii doesn't support downloads.
Or is there any way to make the media player work ?
You don't need a Microsoft browser (ugh) to get a plugin to work.

No, why would anyone want to do something like that?

There is not much that can be done about how nintendo was cheap and didnt give the wii very much mem/processing power but it was smart giving it an sd slot. I think an update allowing opera to utilize the sd card would be very useful. The wii could put as many fovourites on it as can fit, store memory intensive plugins like java, allow you to upload and download to sd to but not allow certain files to run on the wii (eg. you could use photos or music that the wii already supports, allow downloading of programes (like .exe) but not to run them on the wii) that way you can take them to your pc. Nintendo could offet plugins from wii shop cannel internet channel updates or from a nintenod website. Mabey the wii could even use sd as ram. The possiblitys for the sd card on wii are many. Anyway I think that wii and opera could make good use of sd.
nintendo could also make a new wii system update with word prossesing, the ablity to print to a printer on the wired or wireless network it is on and mabey even acess network drives for more storage. With all that you could print from the news and weather channel.
thanks for readin:)
So this is my thought. Why not overhaul the Internet Channel to use Opera Mini 5 as a base (after that goes gold)? Couple that with Flash Lite 3.1 and the Wii Internet Channel could be on the way to being godly. Please make this happen one day!

The copy and paste facilities of Mini are available because of the Java platform it's built on. Mini, as it stands, requires Java to run - the Wii has no Java implementation.
Mini is very popular, and having tabs would be nice, but the loss of functionality (especially when you have a full-size screen to work with) wouldn't be worth the trade-off.

Well I didn't mean use Opera Mini 5 as is as that's built for cellphone use, but Opera could build a new Internet Channel in the same vein as Opera Mini 5 while keeping all previous functions of the Internet Channel today.

I'm aware anything involving the Wii Internet Channel has to be run through Nintendo first and foremost. If they haven't issued any final decisions, then I do hope at least Opera can talk to Nintendo about how to progress the Internet Channel further including incorporating security and stability updates and maybe a few new features that are suitable that fans have been asking for.
I digress though. I'm just jaded that Nintendo is putting more emphasis into the DSi Browser than the Wii Internet Channel and that the DSi Browser is superior to the Wii Internet Channel despite not having Flash on that platform. =/

That's what I mean - building it in the vein of Mini involves removing content and functionality from the page - and it wouldn't bring you cut and paste, only change the way pages are loaded.
Also wondering if there is any way to scan for viruses?

Time for something I posted at Nintendo's Official Tech Support Forums:
The Wii cannot get viruses from the internet due to how the Wii works and how the Internet Channel is setup.
1) The Wii only has a 512 MB Flash drive for storing data (half of the drive is set aside for storing Wii system files and firmware updates). Due to this Flash drive, the Internet Channel does not allow downloading from the internet (not even to SD cards).
2) The Internet Channel only will allow your Internet Channel settings and cookies to be saved (you can delete cookies though if you need to delete them). Your browsing history (or cache) will only stay active when you use the Internet Channel. As soon as you exit the Internet Channel, the browsing history is automatically deleted.
3) The Wii can only run one application at a time. So it's impossible your Wii can be infected from the internet.
So at worst the only thing that could happen when using the Internet Channel is that a malicious file or webpage can make your Wii crash, but that's easily fixable with a hard reboot (hold down the Power Button until the Wii turns off and then turning the Wii back on) or unplugging and replugging the Wii's power cable followed by turning the Wii back on.
And before you ask "What about the pop-ups telling me that I'm infected?"
This is what is called scareware where a pop up will appear telling you that you're infected and that you should click something. IT'S A TRAP. But if you're on the Wii, the trap won't work -- you can just hit back a couple of times or go to another site. But if you trigger the trap, the worst it can do is it may crash the Wii, but it won't break it, steal any data, wipe any data, infect the Wii with viruses and spyware, etc...
Now if you were on the desktop PC and you fall into the trap, then you'll have problems and will have to run anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners on your computer.

@Ngamer01: it's unwise to assume that it's impossible to get malware or viruses just because files can't be downloaded. Many viruses spread by exploiting bugs in code, i.e. a carefully-crafted image file that, when loaded into the browser, causes a piece of code embedded in that image to run. Homebrew developers used to use a similar vulnerability in Twilight Princess to allow the installation of their custom pieces of software - Nintendo had to create a System Update to patch this hole. However, this doesn't mean that there actually are viruses out there in the wild.
The Internet Channel, or the Wii as a whole, has no virus scanner - since there are no known viruses out there, there no value in scanning for them - what would you look for? If a particularly bad vulnerability comes to light I would imagine Nintendo would try to push through a System Update to patch it.

The Wii can only run one thing at a time and the exploit you spoke of is run off SD Cards. Since the Internet Channel doesn't use SD Cards, nobody will be able to do anything even if they try attacking the Wii through the internet to try running arbitrary code.
If the Wii tries to run something else at the same time as running the Internet Channel, the Wii crashes and since the Internet Channel immediately closes upon a crash, any coding rigged to run after the crash will fail.
So really the only means one could try attacking the Wii is through SD Cards.

I'm not quite sure where you're getting your information from, but there's no guarantee an interrupted task will crash.

I haven't tried it myself, but as I recall YoVille is pretty demanding on processor power and space - it may be just that the Wii hasn't got the power to handle it.
After turning rumble off, you should no longer have rumble when using the Internet Channel. Wii Remote settings are saved to the Wii Remote and not the console, so the settings should carry over to other games and channels.

If you and other other Opera fans want to speak up that Nintendo should use Opera again or allow Opera the option to develop for Nintendo platforms on their own. No guarantee Nintendo will do anything, but they will at least listen.
