Opera 9.5 freezes

I've updated my Opera to 9.5 final version, but it's almost impossible to work in it.
While Opera is downloading something, it is completely frozen, no windows are painted, only window's caption and menu bar.
But when download finishes (the window, that tells me that the download is complete, is also 'frozen' - absolutely white bar) it becomes possible to view pages, though, also only after several attempts (I minimize-maximize-restore window).
Looks very strange, looks like a very seroius bug, but on the forum I didn't see similar messages.
Very-very pity...

And, for example, if I want to download something, a usual window (open/save and so on) appears, but it's also 'frozen' - it's a grey bar with a one grey bar on it (on the place where 'save' button is situated), and when I press Enter, opens a usual 'Save file' dialog, and, what is very strange, this window is also 'frozen' - only some artefacts.
Maybe it's a bug with a skin?..

I've downgraded to 9.50 beta 2, it's OK.
No matter, I want to say thanks to Opera's developers - downgrade was absolutely successful, even all opened windows were saved.
But the problem in 9.50final really exists, and it's a critical problem.

Anybody knows, should I submit this description to the bugtrack?

This is happening to me as well. I'm trying to download a Japanese TV show via BitTorrent, and every few minutes Opera freezes, and eventually crashes. It's very annoying, and I've gone from singing the praises of Opera to hating it in no time flat! sad

Windows XP Pro SP3 with AMD 900 etc etc - freezes continuously while downloading and GUI doesn't redraw. Doesn't affect concurrent running programs - just opera. Only fix is to kill Opera and restart. Version 9.50 installed over an installation dataing from Opera 5.

Same for me... When i try to download something (i don't know size is important or not, they were all about 100MB) from Rapidshare it sometimes freezes as the way you said... Also same thing happened while using Yahoo Mail... This issue isn't related with CPU or cache of my PC. I checked the usage of them while problem occured. They were not more than %10... Please fix it...

Unfortunately I have the same problem. Also some of my saved log in details are eliminated when the screen comes back after a freeze.
Have been expecting a fix from Opera ,but nothing yet.

Also freezing doesn't affect the download process... It freezes but it still download the files without any errors... I can see the counter...

I had the same frustrating problem and almost downgraded to 9.27.
Then I noticed, that the freezing allways occured when dowloading .pdf files.
It turned out that the .pdf Plugin was missing, beacause I use the Adobe Acrobat (not the Reader).
All it took, was changing the way .pdf Files are handled under Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Downloads

Even so, it is pretty amateurish programming, not to test for a missing plugin and let Opera freeze.
Maybe freezing under other circumstances has similar causes.

Hope this helps

Mine also does it with AVI's and wmv. My download screen will be OK unless I visit another site and come back to the download screen. Wherever the cursor is on the screen, the page will start to fall apart as I move it around, until it just freezes. But yes, the download is still happening, just the page has frozen. Also when I finally get the download screen back up, the file just downloaded does not appear.
I will give it another day or two for a fix from Opera , otherwise I will be looking for a new browser. Lets hope they do care.

I think it isn't related with PDFs. It is a general issue. It freezes after a couple of minutes when i try to download RAR files...

About PDF - it's another bug, not so critical smile
You mean, when you open url of pdf file, the page window is white and nothing is drawn?
Yes, I've also met this problem too, but it doesn't interfere viewing other pages.

While this 'freezing' bug, which is discussed here, is much more serious - while downloading and after it, absolutely nothing in Opera is drawn, except for the caption bar.

Likewise Opera freezing/re-drawing problems - and not just when downloading files. Finally it's just about dead, bringing the whole system to a dead stop too. The only solution is a forced close of Opera and restart. Seems to be a time-related thing, the longer it runs, the worse it gets. I've tried fiddling with the cache size, but makes no difference.

I'll fidddle some more, but suspect I'll have to revert to the old Opera version!

So, I'm not alone.

In my case, after browsing website for a while, Opera stop painting. I can force update webpage area by drag some thing like the tab or (invisible) image on webpage. And I thing that I cannot move back to the older version because I saw some e-mail database upgrade or so. Hope the team will fix this problem in the near future.

Seems to be similar to my problems here... i've not yet noticed this with 'normal' downloads (ok, didn't try downloading a couple of Gigabytes yet) - but it is reliably reproducable by just activating *one* torrent, did not take more than ten minutes for it to happen then so far. Empty window, frame-only no-text style, corrupted GUI, context menu in taskbar is also corrupted with sometimes graphical artefacts elsewhere on desktop (outside opera window). Program *seems* to still run normally, system or other programs are not affected. After closing it the 'legal' way, Opera has lost track of latest history and downloads - i've to force-kill it for that *not* to happen. Sidenote: i'm running it on up-to-date XP SP2 system. Minimizing or not doesn't make a difference. Investigation into the matter would be *very* appreciated.

There's a lot to like about 9.5 but I've had it crash on me several times when i start a download. It actually freezes and ones i go back to the desktop and return to opera, it won't restore. it looks like its frozen but the downloads continues without a problem. I tried to restore opera after the download was completed but it was still frozen so every time this happened i have to wait until my download is completed and has to restart opera. anybody experienced the same problem. I'm a great fan of opera and i just want to inform about this and get this fixed asap.

A friend even has Opera freeze his whole system, once Opera freezes nothing can be accessed anymore.

Seems to be a serious issue in 9.5

I signed up for this forum just to report this bug and now see that others are experiencing it as well. My experience is that it crashes after about 1 hour. After about 3 hours it affects my desktop. I click one icon and it opens another program. I know it's Opera 9.5 because I just upgraded it and when I remove the program, the crashing goes away.

I would love to just downgrade to 9.27 - but it won't let me! I have system restored several times and tries reinstalling 9.27 over 9.5 but when I do so, Opera won't open. Now it only opens after putting 9.5 back on it.

Bottom line is: I'm stuck with Opera 9.5 and really need it to work, because I can't just download torrents for 1 hour and then have it crash. I am surprised Opera hasn't fixed this yet because it is VERY SERIOUS.

I'm having a screen redraw problem with Opera too, on Windows XP, and it seems to happen when downloading something. Opera becomes very unresponsive, and random parts of the GUI and the web page you're viewing become invisible or flicker. Then, Opera may freeze entirely. So far it has come back every time after minimizing it and waiting for a while, though, so the browser doesn't actually crash to desktop. Here's a screenshot of how Opera looks when this problem occurs. In the screenshot, I was trying to download a Windows Media file. The black boxes are just my edits to cover the urls and site names that don't really have anything to do with the problem.

Opera 9_5_issues.jpg

As you can see, the GUI doesn't draw properly. sad The save file window doesn't have any of the text on the buttons it should have, the files in the folder it's pointing to aren't shown at all... I never had this happen with Opera 9.2 versions.

I'm glad I found this forum- I thought it was just me! Anyway, I am having the same freeze probs while downloading ANY files after upgrading to 9.50. I have tried reinstalling Opera 9.50 and also deleting and doing a clean reinstall only to have the same problem rear its ugly head. I would like to go back to an old version, but am afraid that now that I have done a clean install of the latest version I will lose all my settings going back. Has anybody else done this and gotten away with it? Thanks.

I just installed Opera 9.5 beta 2 into the same directory as Opera 9.5 final was, and none of my data was lost.
But, of course, don't remember to _not_ delete 'old' version before installing 'new'.

The same problem for me. It freezes when downloads tab is opened. When it's closed, no problem.
Also I have a little problem with a contextual menu. After certain time of Opera's work it becomes plain OS contextual menu, without any Opera-specific icons and font formatting.

Hello, the same exact thing is happening to me! It freezes when I download, usually right after I click the download link. Sometimes pages with a lot of pop-ups freeze the browser too. It gets to where only the title bar shows up, and I have to move the mouse back and forth for parts of the browser to show-up again, lol. The good thing is that it hasn't crashed yet.

I have XP Home SP2 and I'm running the 9.5 final release. Are there updates to fix the bugs?

I upgraded to 9.5 and Opera freezes after using it for few hours. It's just not responding. And after the first freeze, it freezes every time right after starting Opera until I reboot. I upgraded to latest 9.51, but it doesn't help. I'm using Vista.

PS. The freeze seems to happen every time I open new empty tab.

I have also encountered this problem with Opera 9.5 final and WInXP SP3. Any substantial download causes Opera to slowly become unresponsive, freeze and occasionaly crash to the desktop. Also, just leaving Opera open for longer than an hour causes similar slowdown, lack of response and problems redrawing the screen. I upgraded from a 9.27 installation.

This is extra frustrating as Opera 9.50 behaves beautifully under Linux, both x86 and x86_64.

I will install the 9.51 RC on windows and see if this helps.

I don't understand what happened but just a couple of minutes ago when i try to save a file, Opera 9.51's tabs and bars became black. Also save window was black too... It looks like the bug (freezing) in 9.50 but now it was black, not a light color... And after 10 seconds it's gone and now everything is normal... If it happens again and Opera frezees i will report it...

9.5 freezes my laptop (XP SP3) like crazy. 9.51 doesn't help (freezes on startup now, rather than a few minutes after i open a page, most any page). Attempts to install previous versions (9.2*) lead to an Opera which instead of opening when i click the .exe tells me to install multiple users or some such nonsense. Just leaves open an opera.exe with no window using under 1000K memory. Please, you don't understand, i've reverted to using INTERNET EXPLORER. Please do not make me use Internet Explorer. I won't use Firefox. I want Opera.

Also have freezing issues (WinXP Professional SP2): usually after transfering (sometimes during transfering) GUI is not responsible - shows only main frame, menu bar and a tab bar.
If problems will continue I'll probably turn back to 9.2x version.

PLEASE, FIX this multiple freezing issues.

It was suggested elsewhere on these forums by EricJH that you clear out history, cache etc, close opera ,find location of and delete profile\opera6.ini file and delete it, restart opera 9.51
You need to put bookmarks etc back in along with customisation but its been running now without a crash for a couple
of hours
Also Yahoo Mail is working, previously it would only run the old version
