Major issue with University use of Opera

I'm not sure anything can be done but - for information.

I've grown quite fond of Opera. the speed and functionality is great. Additionaally I go to some length to stress the importance of standards in the courses I deliver to undergraduates.

The problem is that as a university we uses Blackboard/WebctVista and Turnitin. I even throw in the odd Moodle. I would point out that Turnitin just point blank refuses to work with Opera (they know about it) and WebctVista just falls over with Opera (not a recommended browser). Moodle is usable (although currently you can't use the enriched editor)

This is a shame because given the choice I'd prefer the students to be using Opera. :frown:

Hi drrcherry,
firstly - I notice it's your first post! Thanks for registering and welcome to the fora on my Opera

Operafan made me aware of your post - we know about the blackboard problem but I had not heard about Turnitin. It's turnitin.com, right? I'll make sure Opera contacts them directly about this. (For the record, it's now issue 348582 and sent to the Open The Web guys).

I am an instructor at a major university that uses WebCT/Vista.

I have used Opera with WebCT for years. Opera is just much faster than IE when using WebCT.

I am now using Opera 9.51 and "Mask as IE" which works just fine for most things. The only problem is that it ("Mask as IE") does not work with the Chatroom feature. However, if I "Mask as Firefox" everything works!

The only reason I use "Mask as IE" is because I don't get the security certificate popups whereas with "Mask as Firefox" you will need to accept the certificate popups -- and sometimes I have to wait for the popups. Otherwise, if you proceed without waiting for the popups, Firefox has problems with WebCT. It would be nice if, once you accept the security certificate, it would stay that way instead of poping up every time WebCt is loaded.

I have never had any luck with using Opera as Opera with WebCt, however.

I'm sorry for your trouble but you should really talk to the WebCT vendor to get their issues fixed. Just from your mild experience with masking you can see already how broken their application can be.

Interesting that Opera 9.27 works better than Opera 9.50/9.51 with WebCT.

Well, no sense in stomping a mud hole dry on this if Opera is working on this. In the meantime, for this fall semester -- no need in forcing a square box into a round hole when FF handles all features of WebCT. :frown: The security certificates popup only at the beginning of a session so no big deal.
