Chrome Vs Opera

I did a ton of tests last nite with every browser speed test I could find. I included the latest versions of Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and IE7.

I wanted to share that there is no doubt Chrome is a faster core engine than Opera. It beat Opera in virtually every test except for Sean Patrick Kane's javacscript test, and the ones it won by it won by alot. It also displays more pages than Opera correctly (based on my personal list of Opera problem sites). We already know that Opera beats Firefox, but the gap between them is less than the gap between Opera and Chrome.

This doesn't mean that Chrome is a faster browser to use. It's very limited in functionality and customizability. Even if the open source community did build all sorts of coolness for Chrome, we'd be back in the FF territory of having to download endless plugins to get things to work like Opera. I'd personally never switch from Opera, but I can see how non-power users will find Chrome very accessible. They're simply not competing in the same space.

The upside of all this is that since it's an open engine, there are a lot of things Opera could take from it. Separate processes, ultra-clean memory and javascript handling, etc.

BTW there's also this awesome comic by Scott McCloud about Chrome, very inspiring.
