US '12 Presidential Update

For the benefit of all of those of us in Europe, Asia, Antarctica and elsewhere, that is, for everybody who doesn't hang feverishly on every flash event in the upcoming Presidential election here, those who do will post here from time to time with tidbits that might just well affect your well-being in terms of incineration, etc.

We have yet to be done with the 2008 election and you want to start going at 2012? What's the matter with you??? These campaigns last an eternity as it is.

Well, the champaigns take longer and longer - it's only logical that at some point they'll start before the previous election. left

Why do we see reports about massive queues to "register", etc? We are registered long before elcetions and you cannot do it on the day itself. Enlightenment please as seems a rather stethced oddity.

You do have to register long before the election - the exact time varies by state, in my state it is 30 days and that is one of the shorter times. Though we also passed a law a couple of years ago allowing people to vote early, so there was about 5 days when you could actually register and vote at the same time.

You do have to sign in before you vote on election day, but you have to already be registered.

Will there be web browsers in 2104? Or an internet?

Well, some people on here have pointed out to me that by the time the next election rolls around, Ron Paul will be quite old.
That is true, but hey, he could run and get elected! Look at that old fart named Reagan!
Regardless of all that, (and maybe I'm counting far too many chickens before they hatch) I take pleasure in announcing that Rand Paul, Ron Paul's son, will be running for a Kentucky Senate seat. (Let's hope he can pull an Obama and run for President after only two years of being in the Senate)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-MXR20SOgw

Edit: "Disappointed soldiers in the Ron Paul Revolution, take heart. Your leader may have been defeated in '08, but He was not vanquished. For He hath given unto you a Son to continue His work. And He shall be called Rand Paul. And He shall run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky. And He shall have gloriously curly locks of salt-and-pepper hair that shall drip with the oil that shall fuel a libertarian uprising!"

It was interesting to come back to this and note sgunhouse's answer to my curious puzzlement about massive queues. Here I get an annual letter from my Local Authroiry confirming my information to stay on the voters roll that you go on when 21. They give you a stamped addressed enevelope too. No long queue in streets, etc. You can even confirm over the Net!

Massive queues to register? I've never seen one. Long lines to vote, yes, but to register--not in my experience. When I moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently, I was automatically registered to vote when I took out a driver's license. Ohio might be different.

There used to be significant problems registering in some Southern states, but I think those days are gone.

Don't they have enough points to vote at? We don't seem to get that even in high polling and both countries are not that super in high percentages.

At the first Holyrood elections in 1999, 59% of Scots turned out to vote.

However, in some constituencies just four in 10 people used their vote.

The numbers who voted were equally low at the General Election two years ago - the lowest in any Westminster election since 1918, when women did not have the vote and many men had not returned from World War One.
Parts of Glasgow had particularly low turnout rates, with the Shettleston constituency the lowest at just 40.6%.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/2886587.stm

It entirely depends on what sort of election is being held, as almost certainly the case in Scotland.

The last national election here had a turnout of 61.7% of eligible voters, but for school board elections, the number might sink dramatically. Or it could be higher, depending on the issues involved. The variability among states in 2008 was considerable, ranging from over 78.5% in Minnesota, where most voters can read,to 50.6% in West Virginia, where most can't interpret the signs that say, "Vote Here."

Anybody who fails to vote "because the lines are too long" are liars in those areas where early voting is allowed, which is to say, the majority places in the U.S. Problems persist, though, as is the case in Scotland.

The presidential election favours the incumbent, unless Obama makes serious mistakes a couple years from now, bad luck, or one of those crazy lone assassins succeeds (though that hasn't happened for four decades now), he would enter the favourite of the race. Then again, some Republicans could have a closer look at how Clinton won against Bush (Perot of course helped matters).

My money is on Mitt Romney. Conservative enough for centrists, fiscally so, at any rate.

I'm still hoping for Palin, however. She's on the "death squad" bandwagon again. Gotta love the ditz.

Sarah Palin: The Pelosi Bill Was Rammed Through on Saturday, But Sunday’s Coming

We had been told there were no “death panels” in the bill either. But look closely at the provision mandating bureaucratic panels that will be calling the shots regarding who will receive government health care.

What will Obama have to do to lose in 2012? I'm not sure, but he'd be a shoo-in if he'd call for a public hanging of the folks who gave us our economic 9/11.

And the news is worse than we imagined!

Mitt Romney would be a long shot. With all his money, he failed early last time around. Huckabee lasted longer. Also, Romney may be perceived as being soft on abortion, and for that reason he would not get enough support from conservatives.

That will never happen.
Neither one of them will see the white house.
The Republicans lone shot at getting the White House is if the Republicans nominate Ron Paul.
Otherwise, it's rip

(By the way, I find it interesting that my state's Governor is probably going to run for the Repub nomination. Have things really gotten that bad? bigeyes )
