Opera.com freedom
What is Opera.com/freedom all about? I hate it when people are quiet and secretive about thingsThursday, 11. June 2009, 11:19:02
Opera browser designer Jon Hicks says they've managed to squeeze the whole of the internet on to a usb stick.
Not bad is it!
Perhaps Opera 10 Beta1 made it to the final already!

My other idea is that Opera is out of server capacity for Turbo, and wants all Opera users with fast connections to be a part of the global Opera Turbo farm, to compress and push out lofi-web to people with slow connections. Nah.
Or perhaps MS has given in, and start providing Windows with IE and Opera....freedom to choose between them? Extremely unlikely.

Perhaps all websites have started using css standards and stopped browser sniffing...that would be a reinvention! haha

The lightning suggests it's about Turbo, which suggests that it's about 10. But 10 can not possibly be finished... I don't get it.
My new suggestion: they have magically finished Opera 10, Opera Mobile 10 (not 9.7) and Opera Mini 5, and everything gets released on Tuesday. : - D

that cloud idea is a good one. i just thought it was something about 10 being released.
edit:
What if it's a cloud OS by opera? that would be crazy!

Really. And what are we supposed to search for?
Just a clue: AJAX + mobile.
What about it? Opera Mobile already supports Ajax. Has done so for ages.

But as these little networks grew, some computers gained more power than the rest and called themselves servers ...
Hmm... seems it really has something to do with cloud computing and turbo.

It seems those servers are in the US, same with the Opera Mini 4.2 servers.

Well, scarily enough, it could be "finished". Opera seems to vacilliate between 5 betas and 4 RCs and one beta and on to "final"... I get the feeling that they always try to do a huge bunch of testing and betas, but then management says "Thou shalt ship on $date, damn the bugs and full speed ahead!"...
So I wouldn't discount the final release of v10. With 10.01 to follow next week to fix the showstopper bugs...
Opera also is prone to hyperbole - I don't think they take themselves seriously, but also don't seem to understand how to market to the US at least. Think of the "Power Ranger" for instance...
Of course, maybe they really have something, but I wouldn't bet on it. I still am giddy with anticipation, though I fully expect to be disappointed.

Reading the opera blog article for Mobile 9.7 before the reinvent article and they use similar words. Although the source for /freedom only says desktop browser and not mobile.
Come on Tuesday
Don't forget Opera Turbo will be introduced in Opera 10 in full as well, it isn't just for Opera Mobile.

Yet my bet is something about connecting Opera users who surf the same site.
I get it from their description.
When there were many computers we connected them in network and made them able to connect each other.
Now there are "many" Opera users, so it's only natural we'll hook them together.

Opera prone to hyperbole?
That's the funniest thing I've read all day!
If anything, Opera isn't good enough at banging the big drums. While Apple and Mozilla are all over the place lying and over-hyping stuff, Opera is always quite matter-of-fact about things and don't brag as much as the others. It's about time Opera started doing what everyone else is doing!

In short, AJAX is simply XML + Javascript used for interactive web applications. But I agree many people use "AJAX" as a for hype word.

Well, as it seems nobody have took my advice (
Opera Software and Freedom Media have announced the world's first mobile widget application based on Opera Software's mobile AJAX authoring environment, Opera Platform. Named “Freedom”, the application offers a collection of mobile pay-per-view services designed to increase the usability of mobile Web based services by offering a suite of widgets such as news, real-time stock prices and maps, all through a rich user interface.
“Freedom is a great demonstration of how the Opera Platform mobile AJAX authoring environment can help operators, handset manufacturers or content providers create compelling user-oriented premium services that are not hindered by the limitations of WAP and GSM/GPRS data transfer speeds,” says Timo Bruns, EVP Mobile, Opera Software. “AJAX has become very popular on the Mac/PC platform, and it makes even more sense in the mobile space as it enables the creation of Web based services that are so fast they seem like local applications.”
The Opera Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) sparked the interest of mobile content providers, mobile analysts and Web developers worldwide when the beta version was released on November 15, 2005. Opera Platform allows developers to create platform independent applications based on well known Web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Together with XMLHttpRequest, the combination of these technologies is popularly referred to as AJAX. AJAX is a Web development technique that is increasingly used to develop new Internet services such as Google Maps and Amazon A9 Search. Opera Platform enables these types of rich Web applications to be developed and used on mobile phones. In addition, Developers can easily adapt existing content and Web applications to run on mobile phones using Opera Platform.
“Using Opera Platform was the natural choice for us when developing the Freedom application” says Frank Rigal, CEO, Freedom Media. “With the Opera Platform Software Development Kit (SDK) we could quickly create a platform-independent mobile widget solution using open-standard Web technologies instead of native code for the different mobile platforms."
At this stage, Freedom will be pre-installed on selected Nokia phones in the Norwegian market, and it will also be available as a free download for Norwegian Nokia S60 mobile owners.
