Opera Search(.ini) Editor
Not really sure where else to post this, so here I am.Couple Snapshots ago (for Opera Desktop Version) someone (dragoonadept) mentioned he wanted to be able to organize his Search Engines, and since OpSed seems to be MIA since about Opera 9.1 was released, I was bored, so I fired up VisualStudio.
I've spent about 3 hours on it total, so although it's basically complete in it's "Features", it's still pretty Alpha quality.
Features:
- Editing Search Engines (bout the same as the editor in Opera, but with all the options that I know of, or are in the INI)
- Sorting Search Engines (move up/down, sort alphabetically)
- Typical Tools (Add, Remove, Cut, Copy, Insert, Paste)
- Creates a back-up before saving (but only one backup, not sequential)
That's about all there is, and all it needs.
Problems:
- Because Opera keeps the "Default" and "SpeedDial" search preferences in the main OperaPrefs.ini file, that file has to be within the same directory as Search.ini (which it should be anyways) at least to change those settings.
- May not work on Vista/Win7 (the application ran fine, but I couldn't find the actual search.ini to save my life, kept trying to load some quasi-ini-file)
- May not work at all, or improperly.
Requirements:
.Net Runtime 2.0 or better
Any feedback, bugs, etc welcome. Once I get it trimmed down a bit more, and commented more thoroughly , I'll release the "source", as crappy as it is.

Rather poorly commented, but tried to keep it "Simply Coded" so it roughly explains itself, but at the detriment of speed/reliability.

Some questions:
1. How do i add or remove a Spacer into the ini with OSE
2. Why does Opera uses 2 or 3 search.ini's. In my case it uses the one from the profil folder, the main one from the Opera folder and also from the location folder. I had to delete all exept the one of the profil to get things well configurated.

You mean the dividers? like
——————
Wikipedia
On the first Tab of the Editor, check/uncheck "<b>Has End Separator (In Context Menus)</b>"
If you mean something else, then I'm not sure, maybe just add a blank (with no name) search?
As for your second question, I really don't know, I think it's probably because there are different coders/departments working on separate areas of Opera, or when they add a new feature that requires a bunch of preferences they just create a new INI for it rather than add it to an existing one?
I'm somewhat annoyed with it too, lol... because there are certain ones that it refuses to get rid of (some of the default searches it comes with will come back if deleted from search.ini).
There shouldn't be a "search.ini" in your main Opera folder though ("..Program Files\Opera\*") there should only be a "operaprefs_default.ini" which basically points to language files, and wether or not it's Multi-user or single-User.
At least one of the 'search.ini' is a back-up/default, used for when it's first installed, or if you "reset" your searches, and they come in a variety of languages, all the ones in "..\Opera\Locale\*" are for that purpose, probably better to just leave those alone.
Added: Simple Validation Before Loading INI (Looks For "Opera Preferences" In First Line)
Added: "Restore Search" To Tools Menu (Replaces Last Opened Search.ini With Default 'English' One)
Changed: "Launch Opera" Menu Item To "Open Opera"
Changed: Layout Of Help TreeView, Fixed And Added Some Entries

I came today to the knowledge of your program. Has been a godsend to me. Since Opsed didn't work anymore I had a huge mess with my searches and now is much better. Thanks.
Just posted to say that in my computer the program consistenly resets the separator flag, so everytime I edit something with it I have to check the separator checkboxes again. No big deal, but probably a bug.
Can anyone confirm?
I'll fix it, if you're still around in about 20 minutes I'll post another build, found 2 other "bugs" when I was testing that one too, so thanx again.

Maybe up/down arrows for moving between entries would be a convenient kerboard shortcut too.
Besides, tooltips show for controls in the search engine entries, but no for buttons like save, close, add, remove, move up, move down, etc. Will be nice to show the keyboard shortcuts in there.
The app is looking better and better. Congrats

You mean like, between Name, Address, Keyword, etc? If that's what you mean, pressing "Tab" will do that pretty well (and actually just noticed one that wasn't in proper tab order)
Edit: Hmm, or maybe you <b>do</b> mean up and down in the Search Engine list... :| (already fixed, I misplaced a line, over-writing the default behavior)
Having ToolTips for the buttons, seems kinda pointless to me, Add, Rem, Up, Sort, Down, kinda self explanitory... but hell I'll add them anyways...lol
Already got 8 changes/additions for v1.0.17 may as well add some more.

- Note: May Change To An MDI So Multiple INI's Can Be Opened In The Same One (If I Get Bored Enough, or People Request It)
Added: "Save To Clipboard" Menu Item To "Tools" Menu

No. I meant to have the keyboard shortcuts in the button tooltips. Kinda like it is now but adding the keyboard shortcut between parenthesis.
Besides, will it be too much work to make the program independent of the .NET runtimes? A lot of people hates them

Thanks for the work. You're a very dedicated guy.
Edit: Found the easter egg. LOL.

Yes...lol, I'm somewhat kicking myself for starting it in VB.Net cause I never planned on it actually going anywhere, figured I'd be bored with it after a day or so, but VB.Net is quick as hell to code anything (with sacrifices in many ways) so I used that, and here it sits... and it's still interesting enough to piss around with when I'm bored.
Rebuilding it in C/C++, or even VB6, would be too much of a pain I think for such a simple tool that doesn't really have any "potential" to go anywhere, for the most part, I'm actually just hoping a bunch of people will like it/use it, and maybe it'll get the attention of some Opera Dev(s), and they'll add (ie: same idea, not same code) it's basic abilities to Opera.
It's main functions:
Move Up
Move Down
Being able to edit <i>all</i> the options for Search.ini
The rest is basically just unnecessary fluff...lol
Edit: Any more feature requests? ("I'll add the (Short-Cuts) to ToolTips) Although finding Bugs would be better... gets kind of annoying trying to find them myself.

Added: "Show Status Bar" Menu Item To "View" Menu (Also Saved To Settings)
Added: More Bugs No Doubt
Changed: Some Of The ToolTips (To 2 Or More Lines Instead Of 1 Long One)
Changed: "Save Before Closing?" Dialog From Yes/No, To Yes/No/Cancel
Changed: File Path TextBox On "Help" Tab To Always Visible (Will Likely Move Elsewhere Soon)
- Will Be Adding Basic Command Line Options To It

Moving
Enable/Disable (Searches)
Remove
Cut/Copy/Insert/Paste
All work on multiple items once the Editor is hidden... I'll try and make it more intuitive (add a Menu Item to/enable/disable multi-select, then disable the editor if it's enabled), but that was the easiest way to do it because I didn't want to get all complicated and have the Editor handle multiple items at once.
I'll release another build soon, but I'm holding back on it because I want to switch it to MDI (so multiple INI's can be edited at the same time) for the next build, but that's more work than I want to bother doing on OSE right now...lol
Edit: a warning about "Paste" though (also with normal single item paste) if items are selected when you hit Paste, it will first replace the selected items, until there is no more searches to paste, or till it runs out of selected items to replace, then it adds them to the end of the list.
Should probably put some of this in the "Help"...lol, so I'll do that too for the next build.
(2009, Aug 13, v1.0.15)
Added: Multiple Item Select (When Editor Not Visible) Good For:
- Removing Multiple Items At Once
- Moving Multiple Items (But Looping Is Disabled)

<b>Note</b>: No MDI, just a couple quick mods/fixes.
27. August 2009, 11:20:43 (edited)
Just a couple of points though
Firstly: Despite me using 'autosearch' & selecting the one of the 'search.ini' found (the one in 'Program Files/Opera 10'), no matter what I tried - the searches weren't being changed
I later discovered that there's ALSO a 'search.ini' in 'Documents and settings/username/application data/opera/opera 10' (In case you haven't figured it out - I'm using Opera 10 rc) & it's this one that Opera actually uses
According to your Help file it's suppose to search 'Documents and settings' so why didn't it find it - could it be that 'application data' is hidden ??
Secondly: Where's the 'Find in page' / 'History' disappeared to ? - is there a way to add them ?? - I find them useful
Thirdly: Any way of adding our own icons ?? - I have a few (non-standard) searches but I have a magnifying glass as an Icon & I'd like something more appropriate - In your program it only shows the 'default' icons location of 'http://redir.opera.....'
Anyway - keep up the good work
Edited: NVM about find/history - I found them in another 'search.ini' & copied/pasted them into my profiles 'search.ini'
When using your program the 'Search Engine Name' shows nothing - but under 'search type' column there's numbers different from a 'normal search' & your program doesn't have the option of changing the 'search type' code
I should be able to fix the Integrated Searches to show a label, I just never bothered to show one because they don't actually have one, and as far as I know, changing the name of it, has no effect on how they display in context menu's because they get their name from within the *.lng file.
Might be able to expect a new "fixed" version at some point today, but no guarantees...
Originally posted by kermitfrog:

Yes it does, it's next to the "Keyword"
Keyword [ g ] Type [ Normal ]
I could probably expand that area a bit and change the label to "Search Type", although I did find one that it doesn't recognize "14" which is "History Search"
Anyway, the more "bugs" people report, the better, thanx.
