DOM Storage

I was wondering if there is any way to get persistant client-side storage in Opera on a regular web page without using cookies. It seems that Opera doesn't yet support the new localStorage made available in HTML 5. http://www.quirksmode.org/dom/html5.html

Is there a page that lists the timeline for implementation for future Opera releases? All I could find was the desktopteam blog, which only seems to report on current alpha/beta releases.
