eye on the competition

Just wanted to share a list of things webkit is coming out with.

http://blog.bogojoker.com/2009/10/improving-the-web-inspector/

Some of these features (such as enumerating event listeners) have already been requested here while others have not. Just thought it would be useful to share.

EDIT: One of the best feature I find with IE's, Moz's and Webkit's tools is they don't need to be reloaded to get information (filed as DFL-811).

Firebug is (or will be preparing for remote debugging) of mobiles and other devices after the current release:

Prepare to support remote debugging for mobile and multiprocess browser:

  • Server side will be headless
  • Client side will have no access to Firefox data

Webkit gets major upgrade to style inspection and resource inspection http://webkit.org/blog/1091/more-web-inspector-updates/

Is dragonfly going to have resource inspection? (preferably with yslow/page speed style tips, suggestions, and performance reviews)?

Here's a video of Remy Sharp using all the debuggers and giving a walk-through

http://jqueryfordesigners.com/media/debuggers.mp4

His experience with dragonfly is... interesting. Some of this can be attributed to inexperience with the tool. Some of it may hint at user experiences things that should be addressed.

I agree with fearphage about the improved breaking request. It should make it easier to discover problems.

We’ve discussed supporting breaking on DOM Mutation a while ago. I believe we still need some support in the Scope protocol to get this working. It wont be in DFL 1.0 most likely, but we hope to support it after that.

I believe firebug lite (100% client-side... no browser dependencies) supports this so is it required for Scope to bring us this?

What about CPU profiling ? IE and Chrome have it (and its quite a handy tool for patching legacy sites that lag for no visible reason.)

but, probably, this needs Scope support, as well ?

12 things web developers should know about Firebug

Just a cool list of things that FB does that DF doesn't have or do yet... some of them.

Firebug is moving to an async model (like DF) in version 1.8. Maybe we can give them some pointers and/or learn something from their implementation.

Also webkit has a remote debugging interface now (WEbkit INspector REmote - weinre).

Also JSConole (a stand-alone web page) enables remote debugging of remote devices via a simple script include.
