Possibly Very Personal Question . . .
I am intrigued by the screen names everyone has.
If it is not too personal, tell your story about how you came up with yours.
I took mine from the nickname I gave to one of my favorite horses, a bay-colored Paso Fino named Mirage.
I'm attaching a
tiny picture of him cavorting early on the day I had to sell him.

There was a competition on a forum "who has the silliest (?) nick." I came up with "Platte Band" (that's Dutch), when I signed up here I decided to translate it

Nothing interesting behind my name here, it's (a part of) my name, and what most people call me.
If and when I do use a nick, it's 'darkelf' or 'j_darkelf', something from my love for fantasy.

I think Domel is my real name.. or maybe not, but I can't remember people calling me any othe way..
Sunday, 21. September 2003, 20:49:15
I made this word up about five or six years ago. I wanted it to sound similar to a word that would be recogised, yet be made up to lessen the possibility of it already having been taken as a user name.
I am always influenced by fantasy and LoTR, and at the time there was something silly happening on our railways (what's new!!) hence the variation on Mithril (Mythic Railway

)

I write and record my own music. My avatar is the desktop icon for a computer-based music recording program!

I began on a tape based fourtrack, so.....I have a fourtrack mind!

Maybe not, but your new Avatar is pretty exciting.

Did you enhance its teeth? I didn't think the rabbit was that scary a couple days ago.

No, it was "nicer" a couple days ago, but someone thought that it's mouth and teeth looked like a bandana

so Trollop helped me make this one.

I thought it was a bandana, too......

I guess I was wrong.

My story is very short:
I live in
Brooklyn and that was the first word to pop-up in my head when I was registering for these forums.
I made it shorter and that's how my user name was created...

Billy Pilgrim was close enough to a real sounding name so that when the I was at a realtime gathering it didn't sound to odd to yell out, "Hey Billy, over here" Late 80's early 90's I was very active in local bbs/chat/irc community gatherings and socializing. My old handle "aka" (not to be confused with "akh) came across fine on the screen, but was cumbersome realtime.

I loved that Kurt Vonnegut book -- in fact, I liked most of his early books.

Can't remember if I ever saw the movie though.

when i was a kid i desperately wanted a nickname cause my little brothers had one too. so a friend of our family came up with scipio, which isn't much different from my real name. later i got another nickname without asking for it, but i still like scipio for internet purposes.

Icarus didn't fall!

I've written short stories since I was a kid. Sometimes I used references to Greek mythology: Narcissus, Echo, Daedalus, Icarus, Ariadna,... and my favourite has always been Icarus. If Narcissus is an example of "Don't love yourself too much", poor Icarus seemed to me an example of "Listen to your father rather than follow your ideals", and that caused me nausea. So, instead of that, in my young inconformist stories, I tried to clear Icarus' name and to show him as a hero who followed his ideals no matter what. Oh, and he had wings too and that's just so cool! Which boy didn't dream to fly?
So, some of my first nicks were Icarus and TheLordOfTheWings

. In this forum I tried lordWings, which is shorter.

I used ml in the old BBS days, still use it as login name on my computers. Had to come up with something else because it became kind of annoying to be called ml by everyone, so I came up with Macallan which isn't too far away phonetically and I like the whisky

I'm not terribly original. When I was little we used to write our names backwards sometimes. (Well,
we thought it was fun....

And some years ago, when I needed an online nick, I did it again. I've stuck with "Tiram" as an online name since -- even bought the domain:)

Well - guess time again it may be to reveal the daark secrets about my name

(well, most of you already know it

)
As LordWings I used to write short stories... in one of them that could well have ended up as a short novel but was never finished (as 99.8% of them

) I invented a race of dragons that inhabit the spirit realm/ghostworld/shadowworld/etc. (think animistic here) but mate, lay there eggs and hatch in our realm... In this Novel one hatchling formed a symbiotic link to one of the two main characters of this story (boy got his ancient sword, so this girl got her spiritual guide) and as I needed to find a name for it I (as I like simple concepts in names (like those fast rpg character names you come up by reading things in your surrounding backward Snelf, Skeb (both Beer)), I used the concept of its nature Shadow and Dragon and mixed them together SHAnDRA.... later in the early '90s as I needed a name for my ventures into the realms of TUBMud...I adopted it for myself.... and since that time I am known to most of my friends as SHAnDRA (Novice, Member of the Silver Fox Clan and finally Wizard

, though the only real code that made it into TubMud was that of the Reaper Famine as the Library and LPC code has gone through so many drastic changes in that time that as I would had been able to introduce my realm into it, its code base was so archaic that I thought of it as obsolete)... ok, end of story is that this name has become part of me (as if it always was my "true/soul name" - Hey, no stop that ritual

I don't think you can gain control of me through it) and I use it whenever I need an ID in a situation that doesn't call out for a fake name but for a true nick or identification.....
