Bookmarks lost some time after upgrading to 10.51

I have recently upgraded to Opera 10.51.

Last night I was checking my bookmarks and I discovered that any bookmark not in a folder was gone. Also some of my folders that kept bookmarks are gone. Furthermore some bookmarks inside folders are also gone.

What has happened? Are these bookmarks gone forever?

What can I do?

Thanks for your help.

From what you are writing, you may have only the standard bookmarks file available in your Opera.
If so, you will have to find your old bookmarks file, to use it.
Did you install Opera 10.51 in the same location as the previous one?
Check "about Opera" for the location of the bookmarks.adr file.
Did you have the previous .adr file in a different address than the standard one?
If so, you might have to tell the new Opera version where it is.

Opera 10.51 has been installed in the same location as the previous edition.

Opera 10.51 is still using the same bookmarks.adr file, in the same location on my computer, as the previous version of Opera.

Any ideas?

If Opera has overwritten your previous bookmark.adr file, which is not a normal behavior, you will have to go for a backup version of the .adr file, or return your system to a previous state, if that is in any way possible with the operating system you are running.
But before you do that, you should ensure yourself that there is no other .adr file on your machine that could be your original Bookmarks file.
Set yourself as administrator and search all hard drives, particularly C: for any .adr file
Search also for hidden files.

Did a search. There are no other .adr files.

By default in Windows 7, System Restore creates a scheduled restore point only if no other restore points have been created in the last 7 days, and before significant system events such as a program or driver installation. However, these restore points contain information about registry settings and other system information that Windows 7 uses. System Restore points do not include the personal user files.

Would these .adr files be considered a personal user file? Should I attempt this?

More good news.... checked my bookmarks today. Half of all the bookmarks not previously lost, have now mysteriously disappointed. So currently Opera 10.51 has removed/deleted/cannibalized ~80% of my bookmarks.

I do backup all my personal files, including bookmarks, though my last backup was a month and a half ago. I guess I can only uninstall opera, reinstall an older version, restore previously backed up bookmarks, transform everything to Firefox.

I have always been a huge supporter of Opera but this is unacceptable.

How do you know this is Opera's fault if you are the only person on this planet with the problem? It's more likely that you messed up something yourself. Did you do a single user installation in C:\Program Files, whereupon Windows started moving your files randomly around?

I have a multi-user installation.

What something could I have done to make my Opera cannibalize 80% of my bookmarks in a matter of days?

Did you find NO other .adr files at all?
If so, I guess you are not using mail, music, contacts, or Unite.
And that only your bookmarks and, if you have any, the personal folder, is affected.
But what I do not really understand is that you say you have about 20% of your bookmarks.
If that is the case, we can expect you to have the correct bookmarks.adr file, but that it has been affected in some negative way.
Unless these 20% are the same as those which comes with any new installation of Opera.
Could it be that something else has occurred on your machine, that made you loose bookmarks. Possibly even before the installation of the upgrade?

I can not say for sure. I have never needed to do this myself with focus on this file. Try searching in these forums, in any Opera site, or elsewhere on the net. But if you decide to go back to the point before the installation of the new version, you should also bear in mind what has happened to your system in between, and first take backup of anything you may be afraid of loosing.
It is only you that can make such a decision as to return your machine to a previous restore point.
Any responsibility rests on your shoulders only.
But if you have had a serious loss of data, this may help you out.

Hang on pal. If you are jumping from software to software because there occur one thing or another in the one you use, you will end up without anywhere to go.
