10.50 - Serious Bookmarking/Quick Find Problem Troubleshooting Guide
In interest of providing a means to test/repeat and verify/disprove the bookmarking/Quick Find problem introduced in 10.50 (still in 10.51) I submit the following testing procedure. I believe - at least for some instances - the exercises below demonstrate there are serious problems with bookmarks and bookmark searching in Vista. This is how I produce the errors on my machine.Do this in a brand new 10.51 install using Vista.
Exercise Set 1 - Bookmarks Don't Go Where We Put Them in Full View
======================
Set Bookmarks View to 'Full View'
Delete each and every and all bookmarks (no bookmarks at all remain)
Empty the Trash
Make a bookmark folder 1
Make a bookmark folder 2
Make a bookmark folder 3
Do Google search for 'chicken' (as in the bird)
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 1
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 2
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 3
Where are the bookmarks? They are NOT in the folders where you dragged them. They are above the trash and below folder 3. This is not what we wanted.
Exercise Set 2- Bookmarks Don't Go Where We Put Them in Split View
=====================
Set Bookmarks View to 'Split View'
Do Google search for 'cat'
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 1
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 2
Drag favicon from address bar ONTO folder 3
Where are the bookmarks? They are NOT in the folders where you dragged them. They are above the trash and below folder 3 in the bottom pane. This is not what we wanted. They are not in the folders where we intended them
OK, drag one 'cat' icon into each of our three folders in preparation for further tests below.
Exercise Set 3 - Quick find Problems 1
=====================
Leave Bookmarks View to 'Split View'
Type 'c' (without single-quote) in the Quick Find Box
What happens? cat and chicken stay in the lower pane.
Type 'ca' (without single-quote) in the Quick Find Box
What happens? 'cat' and 'chicken' stay in the lower pane. Chicken should not be their anymore because chicken has no 'a' in it.
Type 'cat' (without single-quote) in the Quick Find Box
What happens? cat and chicken stay in the lower pane. Chicken should not be their anymore because chicken has no 'cat' in it.
Type 'dog' (without single-quote) in the Quick Find Box
What happens? 'cat' and 'chicken' stay in the lower pane. Neither cat nor chicken should not be their anymore because neither cat nor chicken has 'dog' in it.
Quick search is broken
Exercise Set 4 - Can't Drop a URL Favicon in The Bookmark Pane Anymore
=====================
Leave Bookmarks View to 'Split View'
Do Google search for 'grape'
Click folder '1' to set its focus
Drag icon into the lower bookmark pane in some open area and drop it. Where did it go? I don't know. I can't see it. I have to change Bookmark View to Full View to discover it went right above Trash.
Drag 'grape' onto folder '1'
Click folder '2' to set its focus
Drag icon into the lower bookmark pane between 'cat' and 'chicken.' This works. But in versions up till now dragging the icon anywhere into the lower pane was sufficient to place the bookmark into the selected folder.
Exercise Set 5
=====================
Leave Bookmarks View to 'Split View'
Click folder '1' to collapse (close it)
Click folder '2' to collapse (close it)
Click folder '3' to collapse (close it)
All folders are closed
Click folder '3' or '2' to set the focus on them
Type 'g-r-a-p-e' in the Quick find box
No occurrences of 'grape' are found even though we know there is a bookmark for 'grape' in folder '1'
Set Bookmark view to Full View
Type 'g-r-a-p-e' in the Quick find box
No search results are displayed
Quick search is broken
Now, from these examples is it not obvious we can find and re-arrange the bookmarks? Find a work around? Yes, this is simple in this example but think if you have hundreds of folder and thousands of bookmarks. Rearranging them would be painful and time consuming. Imagine further you are trying to get work done rather than play with bookmarks. One would waste a lot of time.
So, my hope is the developers recognize there is a problem here and can resolve it soon.
