custom search query
On some sites by long-pressing the cursor inside the search box, i can add the custom search to my opera mini home page. But i'm just wondering if someone can tell me (in layman's terms), how opera mini does this? I ask because so far i've only managed to get it to work on google, google.co.uk, google products, wikipedia, imdb, urban dictionary, and zedge.net. On a lot of other sites it simple does not accept the custom search, and just returns the 'copy text' option.★°★°★

I can't get the "add search engine" option for the Urban Dictionary in its mobile format, but if I try to load the full site, I get redirected to the mobile site. Here's the URL of a search result on their mobile site:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/iphone/#search/define?term=groovy
Compare that with the same result on their full site; I had to bring it up in a different browser:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=groovy
Notice the addition of "#search" in the mobile version? I have a hunch that's what's blocking my attempts at adding the site to my search list.
You can still add a site by adding one that works, then editing the search URL using the "Manage Search Engines" option, but you won't get the right icon for the site.
This was discussed in some detail in the following thread:

Just a quick tip:
I've started creating google custom searches for the sites where "create custom search" is missing.

WebDweller, no matter what page of the site I go to, the url in the address bar remains the same. Even after I perform a search at the site. So I can't see what kind of parameters there may or may not be.
StuPot82, I did already try that, but with kinda hit and miss results. Google returned some results, but when I click the (result) link, it just takes me to the site's home page.
Urgh, I give up. I'll just keep the site as a speed-dial. Lol.

Actually, I find it just as easy to do that, or simply bookmark the site. Selecting a search engine from the search bar menu actually takes more time. Also, every once in a while I can't get the address bar back after selecting a custom search engine. I'm stuck with just the search bar on the screen, and have to exit and restart Mini to restore the address bar.Urgh, I give up. I'll just keep the site as a speed-dial. Lol.
A couple of times I didn't notice this, and wound up searching for a URL in Wikipedia.

I wonder if perhaps the search parameters (the ones you see in the address bar on a results page) may have to match a certain standard syntax for Opera Mini to recognize them. For example, ?q=%s, ?search=%s, etc.

To go to full, desktop version of Urban Dictionary on Opera Mini browser (4.4, 6.5), go to hidemyass, hidemyteeth.info or any other proxy website (google “proxy websites” for more), type urbandictionary.com in the text field and hit go, then do you search in the full site.
Urban Dictionary redirect to their mobile version which doesn't work on opera mini.
