I don't have to do any of that, I just log in and it works. (10.51, XP SP3)

Go to Tools-Preferences - > Advanced -> Security Protocols -> and check everything on, including in details menu.
Two sites I couldn't reach before (mentioned above in my post; gmail and tele2), now I can open without problem.

Choope's suggestion of checking the TSL1 box in the security settings seems to have solved for me not only the Gmail login problem, which I suddenly developed, but also my inability to login to my Picasa web albums, also provided by Google. So, many thanks. By the way, I didn't need to check any of the Details boxes.

I primarily use the Solaris version of Opera which is still 10.10. 10.50 introduced a new TLS 1.2 protocol. Last November a serious vulnerability with the previous TLS was published. My previous post did not mention having TLS 1.2 checked. Several new ciphers are included with 1.2. If you have upgraded from a previous version of Opera as opposed to a clean install in a new directory, it will use your existing preferences, and the new ciphers may not be checked. Here is a screenshot from Win XP 10.51:

If you are behind any proxy, go to Preferences > Advanced > Network > Proxy Servers and verify that Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy is checked. This has also solved problems for some users. While you are in the Network preference, the default for Max connections to a server and Max total connections has changed from the previous default of 8 & 20 to 16 & 64. If you upgraded over a previous version, you have to change the preference to take advantage of the new capability of a faster browser.
Regarding the security issue, all servers that handle secure connections for these protocols (HTTPS, NNTP/POP/IMAP/SMTP/IRC over TLS) need to upgrade to the TLS 1.2 protocol. At some point, future versions of Opera will warn you if the server has not been patched. From the Opera Security blog: (Tuesday, 6. April 2010) In Opera 10.52, information about whether the server has implemented the new renegotiation extension is available in the security information dialog, found by clicking the padlock icon on the right end of the address field when you are on a secure server:

If the site has not been patched, you will see the text "The server does not support secure TLS renegotiation. The site owner should upgrade the server." as here:
