Solution to problem connecting to Google Mail: enable TLS v1.1

A couple of threads on this forum have described problems connecting to gmail using Opera's email client, when the connection had previously been fine. I had a similar problem - connection from one computer no longer worked, but I could connect from another computer on the same home network. Even more strangely, I couldn't connect to gmail's web mail using Opera on the problem computer, whereas another browser worked fine.

The solution turned out to be simple - TLS v1.1 was disabled in Opera on the problem computer. I don't know why, as I didn't do this intentionally. Anyway, editing operprefs.ini to change "Enable TLS v1.1=0" to "Enable TLS v1.1=1" or checking the "Enable TLS v1.1" box under Security Prefs in opera:config solved the problem.

Thanks for that info.
Finaly I can receive gmail in M2.

Why this setting changed I do not know. But I couldn't change it using opera:config. It switched to disabled itself. Only change in the ini file worked.

A bug in opera?

Anyway, thanks again!

Same experience here, only via the .ini file worked, but it did!
A simple solution, many thanks.
Can anyone envisage any negative side effects to this routine?

Hello helpful people.

I've been having problems with Google mail as described, giving a blank white screen when I try to load it. All other websites checked so far appear to work fine, and Google Mail functions in other browsers.

Seeing your solution, I went to opera:config and selected to enable this option and save it, but every time I close Opera and re-open it, the box is unchecked again. Further assistance is required, please?

I tried that opera:config solution too, without success.
Follow ehack's advice above and alter the operaprefs.ini file.
If you've not done anything like this before, you should find the file in:
C:\Documents and Settings\userxxxx\Application Data\Opera\Opera.
Scroll down to (or do a search for) "Security Prefs" and make the alteration as above. Most Importantly, do not have Opera open when you make the change.

It worked. smile

I couldn't find the application data folder before, so I disregarded that option because I thought it wouldn't do any better than using the opera:config option. I'm an idiot.

Bit of a strange bug, isn't it? It's not something that fixes itself on a restart or anything like that, takes a bit of under-the-hood inspection. Definitely needs attention from Opera.

Thank you, ehack and export13!

I have Opera 10.51 and I can't send mail using gmail smtp. I have several email accounts, but use gmail as my outgoing mail server for all of them. I have gmail configured on other computers using Outlook and Thunderbird clients, but I'm hoping to use Opera for everything on my netbook to keep the memory demands low.

I checked the operaprefs.ini file and the TLS (versions 1.0, 1.1, 1and 1.2) are all turned on. I have secure connection (TLS) checked. I specified port as 587 (Google specifies either 465 or 587 on this page):

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78799

In Thunderbird, I use 587, but anyway, I've tried both in Opera.

I've tried every possible choice for Authentication: Auto, AUTH PLAIN, AUTH LOGIN, and AUTH CRAM-MD5. (Thunderbird just has "Authentication" with no choice as to type.) No combination of port and authenitcation type I've tried works.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Barbara,
These are my M2 gmail account settings under the Servers and Outgoing tabs, which are working, including sending from gmail account via M2. Don't know if they are of any assistance:

Amen, this TLS problem happened for me also in the upgrade path 10.50/10.51 and for a while it drove me quite batty. Before 10.51 only 95% of mail was coming in, and I never knew what hit me. After 10.51 only 5% of mail was coming in, and I nearly abandoned Opera altogether.

I have this problem, too... sad Typing mail.google.com in my URL bar makes it stall for hours, switching between 'Sending request to www.google.com' and 'Setting up secure connection...' without settling on either of these.

Using rev 3374, XP.
operaprefs.ini security section says:

[Security Prefs]
Enable SSL v3=1
Enable TLS v1.0=1
Password Lifetime=5
Enable SSL v2=0
Enable Trust Rating=0
Enable TLS v1.2=1
Enable TLS v1.1=1

Apparently everything's enabled... Except for SSL2 but I don't know if it means anything. And I don't know how to enable it anyway.
I tried deleting my Google cookies, to no avail. Actually it's worse now -- I can't even log into google.com with my account, as it also tries to set up a secure connection. I can access my account and google sites just fine with other browsers. Didn't have this problem until yesterday, either! It happened all of a sudden today, and has been like this since this morning.

Any ideas?

PS: when going to the Security dialog box, and clicking Advanced details on TLS 1.1, I can see that about 15 checkboxes are unchecked. I tried checking the first 5 and the last 5, didn't change anything. Didn't check the ones in between because I wouldn't remember which to uncheck after trying (in case it doesn't help.)

same problem for me. After I upgrade to 10.53 on my mac Intel, I can not access https google pages whereas http pages are !

Here is my Security Prefs:
Enable SSL v3=1
Enable TLS v1.0=1
Enable TLS v1.2=1
Password Lifetime=5
Enable TLS v1.1=1

I try adding "Enable SSL v2=1" but with not success.

The error I have is
"cannot connect to the server. Encryption methods accepted by the server maybe not activated in your preferences".

Does anyone knows what are the encryption methods google use for its https pages ?

Thank you
