Have I done something wrong Opera 10.51 is very slow for me

Oh woe is me I have had to revert to using Internet Explorer. I am finding Opera very slow since updating to 10.51.
I am on dial-up and when I say slow I mean up to 5 minutes for some sites. Sites that used to open almost immediately before are taking up to 2 minutes. ( wiilders forums is one, when I click on a thread it takes about a minute and the more threads I click on the faster Opera starts to open pages) I am wondering if I have done something that has caused this.
I would sure appreciate any help to rectify this. I hear that 10.52 is looking good.

I'm not on dial up but after upgrading the other day i had a similar problem for a while and it really had me stumped as to what i'd done to make it go slow. I ended up downloading Maxthon browser to have a look at how that's coming along and when i went back to Opera - it was back to normal.

I was hoping when I first downloaded to version 10.51 that that would be the case for me also, but no luck.

Same issue here except I'm on ADSL upto 8mbps, Opera was fine before but after updating I always have atleast 1 problem with the browser, especially slow speeds on sites that need fast speed to watch videos like youtube.

Are you by any chance using virginmedia as your supplier FC360?
I don't know if you are or not but as you are from the UK it's possible. if so then it could be a problem with them.
They have been throttling their ADSL customers for weeks now and Youtube BBC iPlayer and the like have been taking a hit because of that.
Of course if you are not with virgin then it is another issue.

I also see a small decrease in speed the last days/weeks. I also see my RAM growing and growing when opera is turned on. Opera is now always the biggest RAM user, mostly using more as 10%, even up to 30%, while opera 10.10 used only about 0-10%.
But aside of all those bugs 10.5 is a great release.

I sat here waiting for 2 minutes for this site to open and gave up. I opened Iexplorer and the page opened within 5 seconds.
I do not like to do my banking etc. using Iexplorer, but this is crazy!!

I have 56 kbps dial-up, after upgrading from 10.10 to 10.51 had the same slow problem plus pages that took almost forever to finish loading, and for some reason pages with JavaScript kept busy my connection. wait cry

I solved my problems by uninstalling Opera 10.51 completely and doing a fresh installation of 10.51.

Maybe there's a proxy machine between the internet and you... Try enabling HTTP 1.1 in CTRL+12 -> Advanced -> network -> proxy options

I'm using Windows XP with all the service packs and with Microsoft Update enabled, btw. I' also downloaded the latest version of Flash.

Eventually, I went back to Opera 10.10, and installed that in a fresh, clean folder*. All the problems with slowdowns, invisible toolbars that needed to be refreshed to appear, and themes that were incapable of showing certain coloured texts under 10.5x have disappeared. The funny thing was that 10.5x was marketed as the fastest browser on the block [and yes, I'd tried disabling Flash and Javascript, etcetera but to no avail.]

<waits for version 10.60 before upgrading again>

Having read about Opera [and even Microsoft's] difficulties in getting sites to work with new browsers, I can't really grumble about Opera 10.5x not working as I expected. I don't mind sticking with an older version or Opera. Most of the time [and I've been using all sorts of browsers for years] Opera's browsers work just fine. There's no way I would abandon them because of a short-lived little difficulty.

For users who have Turbo enabled or are using an accelerator from their ISP, it uses a proxy. The technology behind Opera Turbo is a proxy server with server-side compression of Web pages.

I recently disabled Opera Turbo, because I found it was actually slowing down my browsing, especially on certain pages. I take it that I could get the advantages of Turbo if I enable htpp 1.1 for proxy servers?

For some reason after upgrading to Opera 10.51 it is now constantly using 50% of CPU even when I don't have any pages open.

I believe this is something related to network environment, because the opera in my laptop works slowly in the office but smoothly at home.
I can reproduce this issue easily and have generate two dump files.
If opera developers want to analyze this issue, I can help to upload the dump files to FTP.

Does your office network use a proxy? If your office network uses a proxy, do you have the ports configured properly? Do you have "Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy" selected?

At last a solution that works! Opera always worked slower in the office than in my home PCs but 10.52 was terribly slow, even after I made a fresh install. But now it seems to be working at normal speed, at least. Gracias!!!

This worked for me;

Tools - Preferences - Network - Make sure Max Connections and Max Total Connections are set to default.
