Trouble sending e-mail

I had this problem with an older version of Opera, but the latest is still doing it. I posted about the problem way back, but got no replies. Thought I'd try again.

I can receive fine, but when I click "Send" to reply or for a new message, I get an error message. When I click the "Open Console" button with the error box, this is all it says:

SMTP service unavailable [421 Error: too many errors]

The message then goes to the Outbox.

Now here's the weird part: if I click Check/Send right afterwards, it goes through no problem! And if I send a second message right after, it goes through without any error message. I've tried using different authentication methods, but they either make no difference, or won't work. I don't think it's the router or Windows firewalls, because it does let it through on the next attempt. Other e-mail programs work fine, except Agent, which didn't give an error message but didn't send all my e-mails either.

I just got finished with my ISP tech support and they say it's something in Opera, otherwise the other programs wouldn't work. I really want to use Opera for everything, but it's too aggravating to have to remember to click twice to send an e-mail.

Any help?

Problem solved.

I asked on the Mail and News newsgroup and someone there said they solved it by playing around with the authentication settings. Eventually I found that APOP for the incoming and None for the outgoing servers did the trick.
