Open With Menu for Files on Localhost

My home page is a local index.html file. If I right-click on it the Open With menu includes a whole load of programs besides browsers:
  1. Opera Internet Browser
  2. Internet Explorer
  3. Notepad
  4. NetObjects Fusion
  5. Jarte Plus
  6. Firefox
  7. SRWare Iron
  8. OpenOffice.org Calc
  9. OpenOffice.org Writer (web)
How can I tidy up this list and why is it different to the list for online pages?

Note: Although I can open index.html in OpenOffice.org Writer Web, Notepad, NetObjects Fusion, and Jarte Plus all fail to find the file. OpenOffice Calc opens it, but it makes no sense to open an HTML file in Calc.

Open in menu from [Document popup menu] is:

[Open in menu]
Include, Internal OpenIn Menu

I guess that is system dependent ( like what programs are registered for what protocol and extension ).
So local .html is just list of programs registered for .html extension. Online file is what is registered for http protocol.

FileTypesMan is usefull program for managing what to open where in windows.

Internal OpenIn menu does not work for me on images sad.
Most of the time file is not found.
Once I opened image from webpage and it loaded different image.

Let me get this straight... you're actually asking a question?!? Oh, I see... it's not directly about Opera wink

I'm assuming you've already adjusted the settings in Windows Explorer under Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab. As far as I know, you can only add programs and change defaults for open/edit/print actions etc. there, but not remove programs directly. One other thing to try is to go into the associated programs and de-register them as handling that file type (in Opera, it would be Preferences > Advanced > Programs > Details... but then you probably knew that and don't want to de-register Opera anyway...). If all else fails, you'll have to mess with the registry (make sure you back it up first of course). Try following the instructions at http://www.notes411.com/dominosource/tips.nsf/0/6B25A9CC220B3CEA8025705F002A7097!opendocument or google for more.

Is it the exact same file type? Make sure Windows doesn't hide known file types from you (don't you hate that default setting?) and see whether one is .html and the other .htm or .url etc.

(Edit: you mention that other programs "fail to find the file" - that sounds strange, is it a shortcut/link to a "real" file?)

Why the sarcasm? I do sometimes have questions about Opera, and yes it is about Opera. Its about the default Open With submenu.

When I right-click on my home page, a real local file called index.html, I get a different range of options than I do if I click on the home page of my web site (for example), which is also index.html.

If I select Notepad, notepad opens, but cannot open the file: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." If I select Jarte (a Wordpad Clone), it opens OK, but cannot find the file.

I guessed I could edit the registry, but that might have some undesirable side-effects, and I'm curious to know what Opera is doing wrong here, if anything.

Not sarcasm, just surprise - usually you're the guy who knows everything and is helping everyone.

As far as I know, when you right-click on a file from within Opera, it populates the list from the OS's corresponding menu (works that way for me from Ubuntu at home and from Windows at work). Just to confirm, if you right-clicking on the file from Windows Explorer (your sig says you're on XP), do you get the same choices? Does opening the file from there work? It could have something to do with Opera passing the file reference in a URL type format ( ...) which simple apps like Notepad can't handle. Is your O: drive a mapped network drive? Would it make a difference if you copied the file to your c: drive?

From Windows Explorer:
  1. Open with Notepad or Jarte works and the file opens
  2. Open with Wordpad also appears on the menu (but not in Opera) and that opens too
  3. Open with Netobjects Fusion doesn't appear on the menu, but does in Opera
  4. I removed Open in OpenOffice.org Calc by deleting a Windows Registry entry

From Opera
Following a tip from another forum thread I edited the Open With MIME entry in Explorer, Folder Options, File Types for URL:HTTP HyperText Transfer Protocol from "O:\Opera\opera.exe" to "O:\Opera\opera.exe" "%1"

Maybe I did that wrong, which would explain the files not being found by Notepad and Jarte.
