Nothing received
I set up my email account:1) initially using email address etc and hoping Opera would fill in the details - doesn't receive any emails
2) set up the accounts exactly as in Thunderbird as far as possible - still doesn't receive email
When I say as far as possible, Opera has no facilty that I can see to enter SSL or 'never' secure connection - it's just set at Auto
Anyone have an idea what is wrong? There are no error messages that I am aware of.
there's a checkbox "Secure connection (TLS)" right above the authentication method dropdown. That's what you're looking for.

It turns out the messages are being recived but only shown in a category at the bottom of the list. Nothing appears in the All messages folder - it's set to show all accounts. How do I get the messages to appear there?
These messages might be auto-filtered or marked as spam. Do they appear in your spam filter?
There's a view button on top of the (apparently empty) message list. click it, and you'll see a dropdown. One of the entries should be "show" with a submenu. In there, check "filtered" and "spam" and also "read"

Well I did manage that and now the received is full. I think this is just too complex for me - I like to store messages in folders that are logical and easily understood and I can't get to grip with filters - doesn't really seem to be a decent free emailer out there.
Filters are so much more easy than folders! No copies of anything. No different places to look for things.
To clear things up:
1) Everything is put in one single place. A list of all messages you have.
2) A filter is something that selects specific messages out of that list. For example, the "received" filter shows you all messages you have received, and the "sent" filter shows you all the messages you have sent.
3) Use the quick find field above the message list in the received view. For example, if you enter the words "Tom, chair" the list of messages shown to you will shrink to all those emails that contain both the words "tom" and "chair".
I don't have a single custom filter for my 40000 messages. Totally unnecessary. Get used to something new, will take some time, but pays off soon.

My problem is the opposite - I see the same emails in different 'filters' and I can't drag messages across to a chose filter, like I would with a folder in Thunderbird or Outlook. Is it just me? I looked at the tutorial but it doesn't seem to work as described.
Understandably you want to use Opera like you would use Outlook or Thunderbird. However, since Opera works in a different way than these other mail clients, if you really must work that way you should stick to those other programs. Opera can be used the same way, though I would recommend using Opera as it's meant to be used.
If you accept that it just takes a little time to get used to something new, you may find in the end that Opera allows you to handle your email very efficiently. In the end, you'll be able to make an educated decision whether or not you actually prefer Opera's filtering system over a folder system.
Writing an answer to your question, I wondered if a simple "do this" wouldn't open new trapdoors for you. One thing led to another, and I ended up writing complete a tutorial that goes much beyond what you ask, but that does answer your question (I guess). Search this post for "can I have folders". If you have further questions, please ask.

Karl, please open a new thread for new problems. If your server supports downloading emails via POP or IMAP you can use Opera for this task.
