Latin small letters with accents don't display on some websites

G'day all. Lately I've noticed a strange problem with some sites (Alan Wood's Unicode Latin-1 supplement, scroll down to the bottom of the upper-case letters; Fravia's main search engines, third line of the "ASK" section: 'teoma's "a la combing" search...'). In these types of sites, the lower case accented character simply disappears, with no replacement character like a box.

Alan Wood displays in "Standards Mode", Fravia in "Quirks Mode", both have UTF-8 explicitly specified. My own site uses windows-1252.

I'm using W2K SP4 rollup1, Opera 9.51, and have many unicode and non-unicode fonts to choose from. I would not have thought that unicode is necessary to display (for example) "a grave" (à). I do not have this trouble on many other sites, including my own (Table of Contents).

Can anybody shed light on this problem?

Gordon.
