New user needs help backing up stuff.

Am using Opera 10.51 and have made changes to the layout etc.. I understand that if an upgrade comes along that I would lose all these settings.
I have read the help topics on backing up certain files but am baffled.

I am using windows 7.

I don't know how to find the files that I need and what do do with them once I find them.

Also what exactly to do with these files should I manage to locate them and save them when I upgrade.

If anybody could explain how to do this in simple English I would be grateful.

Plus, do I need to install an upgrade if I am happy how 10.51 works or will I be missing out on something.

Thank you
Brenda

I think Pesala is referring to Opera Backup: http://www.pallax.com/~discostu/opera/osie/

You can copy the files you've changed and place them in a folder elsewhere, like My Documents.

Or zip it up. Just go to the Opera folders, there's 2, one in the Program Files and the other is in the Application Data folder.
Example:
C:\Program Files\Opera
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera

You could use the Windows' zip; select all the files you're saving and right-click => Send To => Compressed (zipped) Folder.
That's on XP, I don't know about Win7's way to use it.
- I like using WinRAR to zip though, so that's an option: http://www.rarlab.com/

Thanks for the replies.
I really cannot manage to do this !!
I don't know what files to back up or EXACTLY where to find them
I don't know if there is one file to back up or many.
Is 'back up' just another way of saying 'save' the file ? Are they notepad files.
If I did manage to save these files what do I do with them once I save them.

My objective is to be able to do a system recovery on my p.c. which I understand will wipe out any preferences that I have in Opera. I want to reinstall Opera and have it look and act like I have it now.
I have changed the toolbars to have the tabs under the address bar and added various buttons for 'feeds' quick log ins and panels etc and I don't want to have to do that all over again.
I really have tried, but must be thick as I cannot do it. I don't much understand RAR or ZIP but I am capable of saving files.

Type

opera:about

into Opera and it will tell you where your settings are saved.

Save that entire "/profile" folder somewhere safe and you will have successfully backed up all your settings.

For example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\profile\

Thank you once again.
I was not ble to find the folders because the 'hidden folders' were not showing up !
I have now located the folder that is in
C..Users..My name...Appdata...Roaming...Opera...Opera.
Here I have 38 items with names like styles/operaprefs/optrust.dat/wand.dat etc.
Do I now save all those files please or just some of them ?

When I download my new Opera do I then find these files on the new installation and replace them with ALL these files that I have saved here.

It is easiest to just save them all and then replace them all after doing the recovery/reinstall.

I shall save all those files and will report back when I reinstall Opera.
Thank you for the clear explanation of the process.
All my searches were saying to save the profile files and not mentioning about 'hidden folders' or explaining exactly what has to be done with these saved files and folders.
We are not all p.c. whizz kids and a bit of simple guidance is what was needed

100 % results !!

Now that the procedure has been explained in straightforward language it is easy.

The ways that the support forum was trying to explain how to do it were unnecessarily complicated and I did not understand what they were on about.
1. Make sure that you have changed the options in windows to 'show hidden files and folders'
2. Using the help/about in the Opera browser find out where the preferences folder is and navigate to that folder and save it.
3. With the opera browser closed replace the preference folder with the one that you have saved.

Easy !!!

Thanks for the guidance
