Opera Mini 5 basic?

Or how should we interpret these news:

"Vodafone said it had worked with Opera to develop an enhanced version of its Opera Mini 5, which gives Internet access to lower and mid-tier handsets connected to the more basic second generation, or 2G, networks."

I don't know whether this is related to the news. Interesting, anyway...

It really is a pity to notice that Opera is now more focused on operators, than the users whose input and enthusiasm brought OM5 to this point.
It certainly is a very good business decision. But as a long time user, I feel very upset that Opera keeps focusing on squeezing more money out of OM without fixing some very annoying bugs existing since the beta stage.

If we didn't make money, there would be no more Opera Mini... Look at it that way. smile

@ManneS I know, and it's totally right. But when you guys are only focusing money and ( please don't mind my saying ) , but, are a bit sluggish on fixing bugs - I doubt it'll do any good to OM's reputation in the long run. smile

regardless how hard they work it may take more time to fix bugs but that doesn't mean a sluggish behaviour or rather, as I said in another thread OperaMini 5 is way different from earlier version ,

plus the new phone's OS (touch , android etc) mean more testing to do ,

when I read of new biz deal I'm happy coz that is where resources come for developping a better OperaMini , + income = + developers ,

I think, though , customizing OM for operators should be more easy than doing a version able to run in hundred of handsets wink

I see no problem of buying phone with fully functional and device specific Opera Mini already installed on it smile Sounds very good news to me. Well, I'm already using Opera Mini on 2G network, and it works just fine up

It's ironic when you think that originally Opera Mini was primarily targeted at mid/lower end phones but now an operator specific build has to be created for that purpose.

It shows how much Opera Mini has developed and grown.

Actually browsing experience could be even more limited with customized versions especially for Vodafone where OM servers don't appear in tracert. It can identify at least four ways to customize Opera Mini and in total I don't think they reach 1% of all users and because of this advertising is necessary...

You missed the point here, 250 terminals are not so many.

It says Opera Mini is available for download on over 250 different models of telephone supplied by Vodafone (presumabley past and present)

Whatever the numbers involved it is clearly commercially viable both for Vodafone to commission the specific build and for Opera to produce it.

Simple. They made some changes to Opera Mini 5 to customize it to their needs. It says nothing about any basic versions of OM5. OM5 already works fine on lower and mid-tier handsets.

There have been multiple operator specific builds of Opera Mini in the past. This is nothing new. And guess what, Opera gets paid for these custom versions.

This is of course nonsense. Opera is focusing both on end-users and business clients. You are basically saying that they should ignore all revenue from operators and only focus directly on end-users. That's just crazy.

It certainly is a very good business decision. But as a long time user, I feel very upset that Opera keeps focusing on squeezing more money out of OM without fixing some very annoying bugs existing since the beta stage.

No money, no Opera Mini. Do you think serving pages to 50 million users is free?

What do you know about how "sluggish" they are at fixing bugs? Do you have access to internal versions of Opera? How would they fix any bugs if they didn't have any revenue?

Is there any way to not install the dumbed down and downright unusable Mini 5 vodafone so kindly optimized to hell? I tried downloading the normal jad and jar files from my pc but my N97 refuses to install either. Opera link is gone in this useless dumbed down entry level piece of garbage and when the phone is in portrait mode more than half of the screen is taken up by nav buttons on screen. Seriously guys, wtf were you thinking doing this? If it's about money at least offer users the choice of buying their way out of using this nerfed piece of crap. I want mini 5, not the vodafone enhanced p.o.s.!

Basic version? The version I get from Vodafone is actually an advanced version of OM5 with widget support (which is not even included in OM5 standard/global version).
But the thing which I despise is that I'm compelled to download only the Vodafone version and not the standard OM5 version.

Check out the screenshots of the OM5 VF version with widgets here.

This could be a bad move because nobody will want to use such a special versions for operators. It's noticeable the difference between Opera Mini (HTTP+socket) and operators (HTTP only) servers where functionality is almost similar with a chinese mirror (dynamic content alteration). What's good since servers overload was diminished with progressive loading and I could say that 'this and that' game on server side affect OM functionality; does no one noticed that the last time when servers were properly set was in december 2008?

Properly set as for a finished product but is not the case now and wasn't since 'Presto/2.2.0' was added in UA string.
