Amazon: can't use "Look inside the book" (Amazon Reader) feature

I'm putting these in one post, because they're related. I have reported all three of them. Citicards simply locks up. No buttons work, nothing will load, no matter how many settings I change.

Amazon: the "look inside the book" feature doesn't work. I' using Opera 10.51, but the version doesn't seem to matter to them. Get a message from AMZ that the browser is not supported, use another one.

Barnes and Noble: the "search" button in the book search panel doesn't work. After you enter all the information, then press "search," the button doesn't "compress," and nothing happens.

Have to go to different browsers for all 3 of these sites. Opera (10.51, at least) is broken on them.

For the Amazon site try right clicking on the page.
Select > Edit site preferences > Network > Browser identification. Choose Mask as Firefox and click Ok. Then reload the page.

That may work on the Barnes and Noble one too so give it a try.

Post links to the sites in future though it saves us from trying to find the sites you mention. Citicards I have no idea what lnk I should be looking for.

The cause of opera "locking up" on citicards http://www.citicards.com is a popup AD that isn't automatically playing. If you right click the page and click play you will notice the ad will popup and play at which point you can close and use the site as normal. For some reason the ad element covers the entire screen within opera rather than staying in the left column like it should. For a work around add this to you blocked content https://www.citicards.com/cards/wv/swf/filter1.swf

This will just block the ad so you wont have to worry about it. Site should run properly after that!

Ryunes, thanks for the tip. I had discovered that popup, and found I could get past it by disabling plugins in the site preferences, but I like your way better. I might need the plugins once I get into the site. This was preventing me from logging in.

Luxor, thanks for the suggestions. Masking as Firefox worked in Amazon. You can test it by going to the main Amazon site and searching for any book. They almost all have the "look inside the book" feature. Here's one as an example: Seduction of a Wanton Dreamer.

Barnes and Noble, not so easy. here's the link: Barnes And Noble Advanced Search. Using different masks and IDs didn't work. Neither did disabling plugins. I also deleted all the cookies. Just that one button remains frozen. The one thing that worked, and it's a pretty weird workaround, was to switch from "author" to "user" mode, after filling in the search fields. The page is suddenly longer and harder to navigate, and you have to go clear to the bottom of the page to find the search button. Then I clicked on the search button, and the search worked. Then I switched back into Author mode, and the page redrew as it should look, with the search results in place. I don't know if this easier than just opening the page in Firefox, but if I don't feel like waiting for FF to load, this is probably marginally faster for a single search. For doing several searches in a row, it would be pain, and I would then have to open the page in FF.

Again, thanks.

Sometimes the simple solutions are the best. On the B&N page, after entering your search options just press the Enter key (on your keyboard). I didn't even see that search button, so just used the keyboard.

Not being a Citibank cardmember, can't suggest anything there either.

"Hit the Enter key." What a unique thought. I've gotten mouse-dumb, I guess. That's a great find.smile

You don't have to be a member of Citicards to check out the problem on that site. There are several checkboxes for people to select options, what kind of card they want, etc., and you can test with those. They're blocked by the rogue popup also.

Those boxes are all Flash (you'll see when you right-click on it anywhere), not much we can do with that. sad
