Banned User"

Can anyone tell me what the term "banned user" means? I have received this term about someone I have been communicating with and can see no reason why thos person should have been banned???? Thank you!

Banned user means that the user was banned from the site for breaking the rules

Why do Banned Users' Photos stay forever in the Most Viewed, Top Rated etc sections on MyOpera, surely if they are banned their photos should dissappear!

The user is banned because the user broke the rules but the content they uploaded didn't break any rules.

This is not an official response, but this is what you can glean from the various forum rules and Terms of Service (TOS)
Rules Users Agree to on Signing Up

Moderators will deal with messages that violate the forum rules by closing threads or deleting or editing messages. Very serious or repeated offenses can lead to a permanent ban from the site.

Rules of Conduct

3. No porn, sexually explicit, racist, warez related, or otherwise illegal posts. Posting information on cracking software which requires registration could get you banned.

5. Flooding and/or spamming means instant ban.

7. Contact a moderator if you disagree with a moderation. If you think you have been treated unfairly, contact the moderator directly rather than posting in the forum.

Complaining about moderation on the forum can often lead to a ban, as can repeated personal attacks and flaming. Uploading copyrighted images or other files could get a user banned too for violating the TOS.

Spamming (commercial content), hacks, porn or other offensive content (including offensive language) will get you banned immediately, as will flooding (posting the same thing 30 times). Other violations are handled on a case by case basis.

Banned user

Is it not possible that myMaryAnn's friend/acquaintance decided to request his or her account be deleted? People who ask for this will also have "Banned user" show up on his or her page once the request has been processed.

Doubts in this topic: how long an user stay banned until its username is free for use by someone signing up for an Opera account? Can a banned user be unbanned after some time? Even if the banned user isn't fighting for getting him account back?

Some users have been unbanned. I've never heard of a forum name being released.

Just a question. Is there any BAN PERIOD here?
smile O'k, 1 more question. Why do the banned person's friends have to get no accept to the banned person's pages? Yet they are NOT banned:-) I suppose it may be quite inadequate:=)

I can probably answer the first question: Like elsewhere on the internet, there are four types of bans:
Suspension - You can't access your account for a period of time. How long this period is depends on the infractions and is up to the discretion of the staff member that levied the ban.

Permanent Ban - You can't access your account ever again. This is usually given if somebody made serious infractions or is somebody that just wants to cause trouble for a community.

IP Ban - You can't access your account ever again. You can't make new accounts either. You can still browse the site offline as a guest.

Server IP Ban - You can't access the site at all. Not even to read things offline as a guest. This is the strongest ban the staff can levy against a user.

For the record, we don't currently have a means to do suspensions. Banned individuals can be reinstated, but it has to be done manually by someone with appropriate access.

Mind you, someone with access to Tor or another anonymous proxy can get around a server IP ban on any site, and many of our members would know how to do that. In real terms, your last two are no different from a "permanent ban", if the user knows how to get around them.

I'm aware of the weaknesses of those bans, but I didn't think it would be appropriate to list them in my post.

But proxies can be fought against if they are used for abuse. The catch is getting the IP or IP range of the proxy to ban the proxy entirely.

The only people who can ban you are moderators, if anyone says they are trying to ban you then forget it. If an actual moderator were trying to ban you, they would have done so and not bothered to threaten you. Anyone else can't do it.

Given it's not entirely clear to most new members which people are/aren't moderators (you have no OS logo for example), it could be either surely.

Are you saying moderators don't give any warning or pre-indication to users? No cautions?

That wouldn't qualify as "trying to ban" someone though - really it is trying not to ban them. Spammers and such get banned without notice.

Perhaps someone is reporting their posts in hopes of getting them banned?

Or maybe they saw something in the "Ban the person above!" thread?
