Build 3347 Showstopper - Unable to Launch at All

Windows XP Home • AMD64 3500Ghz 1Gb RAM

I see a Buffer Overflow error near to the beginning of the processes monitored when I launch Opera.exe.

Build 3347 was a clean install in C:\Progam Files\Opera Beta\

This is the stack tab of the event properties that gave the Buffer Overflow message. The other events seem to be mostly "Success" or "No more files" but there are a few more Buffer Overflow messages too.

I hope this helps to identify the problem. I don't have a clue what it all means.

64 views and no replies? This is a blocker if some Windows XP users cannot even run the program.

Though so far I seem to be the only one with this issue, I can still run build 3338 and I never had this problem before with any snapshot builds.

Opera.exe is clearly doing something, as Process Monitor reports many successes, but it never starts.

You said 3338 ... did you try 3344 (the pre-Easter build)?

Trying to think of what would overflow ... shouldn't be mail as I presume you've tried a clean install. Fonts, maybe?

Yes, I tried 3344 earlier with the same result. I tried a clean install to C:\Program Files\ using the classic installer with the same result each time.

If I set multiuser = 0 and launch Opera.exe it creates a profile folder, but still doesn't launch.

What happens when you install Opera in a folder with a never used name like c:\Program\Opera folder just for testing\?
Opera always the latest snapshot (default), Comodo Internet Security 2012 Windows 7 SP1 (default), Vista 32 SP2 and XP SP3 triple boot......AMD Phenom II , 4 GB RAM, MSI 850G-E53

I already did that when I installed into c:\Program\Opera Beta\ — it was a new folder. I tried both the Classic and MSI installers for the previous build 3344. No change for 3347 (tested with only the Classic installer).

No change for build 3353 — installs OK, but does not launch.

What can I do to debug this? There is obviously something seriously wrong if Opera 10.51 starts OK, but Opera 10.52 does not. This is on the same computer, with the same kind of installation.

I had seen your problem and was waiting for someone to confirm.
I have not seen this myself as each snapshot has installed (upgraded) and ran ok for me - although I did get crashes with 3353 and had to clean install.

Without error messages all I can suggest to you is check your Security - Firewall /Antivirus?
Maybe remove all Opera controls and then try to restart ???

1. Have you tried deleting the preferences file altogether and launching?

2. You could try Sandboxie; try to run Opera Sandboxed and see if it launches. If it doesn't, the error messages might give you a clue.

3. If you have a system image or restore point that predates the trouble, you could restore to there and then extract (not install) one of the new builds overwriting the "good" build and see if it launches. Again, this SHOULDN'T work, but if it does it would provide some clue as to where the issue lies.

I warmly suggest using VirtualBox, MS Virtual PC, or similar to test. If you keep your VM install clean and store a snapshot where to come back after running a session, (clean) testing EVERYTHING will be super easy. My 2c's.

I've tried a clean installation using the Classic Installer, so its not using any existing profile or configuration files. Installing it on a Virtual OS is not going to telll me why its not running on my OS. Presumably other Windows XP Home users are able to get it to run, even if they are getting plenty of crashes.
