Hi all,

Opera 10.51 detects version four of the Silverlight plugin in Windows XP Home.

Does this mean I'll be able to use Opera to run Netflix? I would literally cry tears of joy if that's the case.

I never used Netflix (don't even know what's about) but I can confirm that on Opera 10.51/XP Silverlight works fine. It feels a bit sluggish but it do so on IE...

Edit: Ok. Now I know what Netflix is... unfortunately, the only thing I can see is a big ad.. in Flash bigsmile

Just tried installing Silverlight 4 (beta) on Win7 64bit with Opera 10.51 and it says......no! Or more precisely it says that Silverlight isn't supported in you browser right now (Project Tuva website).

Have you tried 32-bit Silverlight?

Good question! I just downloaded the installer from Filehippo.com (4.0.50303 RC). It doesn't say what it is.

I had no problem using Silverlight with Opera 10.10, are you saying it doesn't work with 10.5x? No, I checked, Silverlight is working for me with 10.52 build 3333.
I have Silverlight version 3.0.50106.0
(Check Silverlight version by typing "reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Silverlight" at a command prompt, without the quotes.)

That's a great website jleslie!

So is the lack of Silverlight a 64bit thing then as I previously had V.3 and that only worked in IE also?

BTW on my iPhone everything shows up as false, even Quicktime! Alas no Opera either... well, perhaps a lucky escape recently ;-)

See my earlier post. I am using Win 7-64 and have Silverlight 3 working with Opera 10.51. That is something that Explorer 64 cannot do.

Thanks for the info, but I feel it's time to protest and instead of doing the hard work I'll just won't buy/consume anything that has a silvery light emanating from it bigsmile

p.s. Flash doesn't work with 64bit either (only in 32bit IE), perhaps all the developers were expecting Win7 to be a Vista sized flop?

According to http://www.video-flash.de/playerversions/ my Silverlight works. I used http://blog.crazyboomerang.com/2007/12/silverlight-in-opera.html - its old but still valid AFAIK. The example pages there work.

From opera:plugins

Silverlight Plug-Inapplication/x-silverlight scr
application/x-silverlight-2
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight\3.0.50106.0\npctrl.dll

Using the js on that page as well. (http://www.crazyboomerang.com/files/blog/silverlight.js)

Thanks for the reply. Now Silverlight works in few sites, but not in all. Something is better than nothing smile
I don;t know where the issue is.
Firefox can auto detect the Silverlight plugin and works fine. Opera also supports NAPI (netscape plugin apis), why they cannot autodetect and work properly.

Sadly, that didn't work for me in 10.53 on a Win7 64 bit machine. However, it no longer gives me the "please install silverlight" screen. Now it goes to a player window and says " thanks for installing. once your installation is complete restart your browser to watch this movie"

I'm going to be so sad if I can't get this working. When I got Netflix working with Opera it completely got rid of my last need to use any other browser. I don't want to have to go back to using ff for netflix. sad

Only netflix is not working or all other sites which has silverlight is not working ? I don't have netflix account to try out sad
My laptop also has Win7 x64 with all the latest patches installed and SilverLight + Opera works fine.

I don't know how to push Opera to make the SilverLight work properly. I know it is not solely Opera issue that Silverlight doesn't work on their browser by default , Microsoft also part of it but the affected party here is Opera and its users so its only Opera should go & push Microsoft to support their browsers.sad

Excuse me, I apologize if i am reviving a dead thread but i have gotten the latest version of silverlight to work with Opera 10.60a. As far as I have tested the Keyboard Input now works. Please read my notice's below.

NOTICE: Installing 10.60 A will remove some of the Aero features such as one preview per tab in the Win 7 SuperBar as of now that is not supported in 10.60a, as far as I know all other Aero work

NOTICE: You can can choose to remain with your current version of Opera and not use the 10.60a and simply skip the first step I assume that this works with 10.5X

WARNING: This is an alpha build of Opera. It is released for testing purposes, and there may be serious bugs and unfinished features. And i take no responsibility or liability for any damages caused by installing this software

Step 1 (Optional BEFORE PERFORMING THIS STEP READ THE NOTICES): Since most people aren't the latest version of Opera (10.60a as of now) please install it from here
Step 2: Install the latest version of Silverlight from here
Step 3a (For 32 Bit): Go to C:\Program Files \Microsoft Silverlight\4.0.50401.0 (Or whatever version of silverlight you have) and copy all of the files and folders in this folder and paste them in C:\Program Files \Opera\program\plugins
Step 3b (For 64 Bit): Go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Silverlight\4.0.50401.0 (Or whatever version of silverlight you have) and copy all of the files and folders in this folder and paste them in C:\Program Files(x86)\Opera\program\plugins
Step 4: Restart Opera
Step 5: Test SilverLight

This also has shown us that the culprit is both Opera and MS as MS sets up no way for Opera to access SilverLight or know it exists and Opera does not check for Silverlight which should be checked for.

More culprit is on the Opera side only. MS is properly registering the Silverlight under MozillaPlugins, from where the firefox /chrome & safari are picking up. Its only the Opera who is not picking the plugins from that list.

Also I don't think we need to copy all the files from silverlight to Opera\Program\Plugins.. I still investigating a better solution for this.

I will be more happy to talk to a Opera Plugin Team and get the silverlight working on Opera.

I finally found where the issue is. The issue is with Opera only according to my investigation. Silverlight has two type of Plugins one ActiveX and another NPAPI (Netscape/Mozilla Plugins). ActiveX plugins are currently supported by IE only in the market. Mozilla Plugins are supported by Firefox,Chrome, Safari and also Opera. Silverlight installation registers itself for both type of plugin ActiveX and Mozilla Plugins.
Seems like Opera has issues with properly supporting Mozilla Plugins.
(1) If any plugins that are registered under the microsoft.com name are NOT loaded by Opera, thats why Opera is not loading Silverlight.
(2) Opera doesn't seems to be properly supporting the NPAPI also,
-> after changing the name from microsoft.com to Opera.com for Silverlight Opera starts loading the plugin and then later Opera just crashes in fews sites with silverlight. One of the repro site is http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming1080p , visiting this site will crash the Opera.no

I beg/hope Opera to fix this in 10.60.smile Demand for Silverlight & other site support will increase if the market share is also increasing.

Finally, to enable Silverlight Plugin don't need to copy any files, just change the registry entries for Silverlight Mozilla Plugin from Microsoft.com to any other name.cool

Thanks Opera as a first step now the latest beta browser loads all the microsoft plugins without any registry change (hack) or file copying on Window 7 x64 bit. Good job!!

Kindly take one more step and fix the Opera crashing issue when we navigate to page http://www.iis.net/media/experiencesmoothstreaming1080p
