Follow/Ignore Thread

What exactly does "Ignore Thread" do?
Mark read?
Delete?
Not download remaining messages in thread?

For that matter, what does "Follow Thread" do?
If I can see the thread already what does selecting "Follow Thread" do that is not already being done?

Ignore Thread marks the messages as read and changes the icon in the message list for the thread's messages to look like an envelope with a minus sign.

Follow Thread adds a filter under the Followed Threads access point that shows just the thread's messages. And, the icon in the message list for the thread's messages will be like a star/favorite icon.

It just makes the messages non-distracting for the former and easier to deal with with the latter.
