Trackball on Blackberry doesn't work (Opera Mini ONLY)

Hey All-

My first post. I downloaded Opera Mini 5 about a week or so ago. LOVE the speed of this browser.

Worked fine for a few days ... but suddenly, every time I use Opera and hit the menu key, I can't navigate around the menu options. It's stuck on the URL only. I can't shut down the application, can't access my favorites or bookmarks, can't reload, etc. It's just stuck.

It's NOT the trackball, because it works fine in every other application and the O/S itself. Anyone else have this issue and/or a remedy?

I have a Blackberry Tour on VZW and I'm running OS 5.0

Yup I have the same problem. This is a known bug and you can't do anything about it. Just wait for the next update.

Is this specific to the Tour? I haven't has that happen on my devices. Has the bug been reported in the bug report system?

No it's not a Tour bug. I have 9700 Bold. It's mostly a blackberry problem but some people with other phones also reported this problem. Yes, the bug was reported the first day of OM final launch.

I'm having the same problem: OM 5.0.18832, Blackberry Curve 8900, firmware v4.6.319. Every so often, the trackball stops responding (but continues to work in other applications). To be precise, it's the cursor function of the trackball that does not work; the "button" functionality appears to continue working, so I can actually still browse by typing URLs. Unfortunately, this makes it impossible to quit OM without pulling the battery out! Are there fixes in the works?

Yes, i have the same problem like you:
Quite often the trackball hangs and just the BB and Escape works, but also not the keyboard (shortcuts).
A bit better than Battery-pull is though:

Alt+Shift-right+del

Which restarts the phone after some seconds like a batterypull.

I wonder why this Opera 5 Mini is called final, when it is much buggier than the beta, because the beta ran stable (but had other bugs).

I'm having the same problem and it's too bad because I really really like the browsing experience with Opera mini 5. I've got a Bold 9000.

Just switched to BB Bold 9700 from E71. Loved the OM5 on symbian. On BB however the cursor problem is a big problem. Unlike on a symbian where u can kill individual problematic apps, on a BB u have no choice but to reboot. Hoping that the fix comes sooner than later as not being able to surf on my BB is just too much! Come on OM team u guys can do it.

Does the arrow (or keypad) works. That could be used as an alternative...

I just upgraded from Opera Mini 4 on my BB Curve 8330 (OS 4.5). Since I loaded it, I've been able to get to one page before the cursor started acting up. Rather, before it stopped acting at all. Hitting the red Call End button's the only thing that's been able to get me back to other apps. The cursor works fine in the others.

And the really sad part? I wasn't having any issues whatsoever in version 4. p And I like the look of the new version sooo much better. My wife's Tour isn't having this problem.

BlackBerry 8310 Rogers Wireless Canada EDGE TDMA with device on BlackBerry BES.
Device info:
OS v4.2.2.163 platform 2.5.0.24
Crypto Kernel v3.8.4.47

Issues:

1. No cursor at all in Opera even with soft reboot ( Alt+Right Shift+Del ) after installation. Program appears 'stunned' in every regard. ( Deleted it from device )

2. Bloody hell with the Opera Menu options and toggling between the 'options' or 'navigation' screen and the URL entry screen. It's a bloody mess.
Not a complaint just a fact. This should never have been released even as a Beta. It is still an Alpha F Up.

How can I obtain version 4 which is apparently fabled to be at least 'stable' (with warts) unlike v 5 ?

I prefer Opera as a mobile device browser but it is corrupt and does not work on most BlackBerry devices.

For those of you that need help quickly try boltbrowser.com. At least it is working on my 8310 with no problems. Also works slick on my Android OS Motorola Milestone on Telus HSPA /3G.

Unfortunately Opera is F'd for BlackBerry so I will be getting by quite nicely with Bolt until we get fixed up for business with Opera again.

I only learned of Opera and Bolt today through a web search for alternative BlackBerry device browsers since the native BlackBerry browser and the Rogers WAP browser SUCK the big one.

As a result, I quickly endured the pain of trying to run Opera on a BlackBerry device. Opera for BlackBerry is Shite.

Apart from my personal Android powered Motorola Milestone operating on TELUS HSPA / 3G there is no other mobile device browser I have found that can get me to my Outlook Web Access URL without crashing.

Try this: https://mail.acciona.ca/owa

This is my company OWA which I cannot access via company BlackBerry but can access with personal Motorola Milestone on Android OS.

Life is funny, all the time. And it's always IT's fault. Just kidding.

Looking forward to help / feedback / clever abuse / dinner invitiations (Vancouver Canada) / vacations / new wife or facsimile / nirvana

Bregards, j

I'm having the same problem with my BB 8350i if I restart it, the browser will work once then I close it and open it again later and that's when it hangs up. Bye Bye opera! Call me when you get it fixed because I do like the layout and functionality of the browser (when it works).

I'm having the same issue on my BB8830 WE v4.5.0.186 Verizon.

The trackball always lost after browsing a few web sites with zoom in and out.
It doesn't matter which web sites. I clicked the menu but could on get the trackball to move at all.
Ironically, the trackball still works with other app.
I have to reboot the BB to get the trackball work with Operamini again.
But then after browsing a few websites. same sh*t happens.

Common OP team, please fix the trackball issue.

Thanks.

Just had the cursor problem on my 8320. It occurred right after installing the new Ebay app from Blackberry Apps Forum. Opera Mini lost cursor control. Finally uninstalled the Ebay app, rebooted and all is well again. Not sure if it is a memory, or other, conflict. Guess I'll keep Opera Mini and leave Ebay to the laptop.

Just downloaded Opera Mini 5.0 and had the same problem. I can't believe this bug is still active at this late date (July 7, 2010) since it was first reported in April!

Had to uninstall Opera Mini.

Same issue, BB 8320. Opera hangs up after a few weeks of normal use. Only option is to delete the app, soft and hard reboot don't fix it.

Unlike earlier, when I tried to download it this week, Opera said the 8320 is not supported for Mini 5 and forced me to download 4.2 instead. Let us see if this is better. Mini 5 was a painful UI for non-touch users anyway -- too many click to get anything done.

I have OS 5.0.0.1036 now on my BlackBerry 8900 Curve (and Opera Mini 5.0.19692) and from time to time the old bug reappears.
The trackball then doesn't move up and down, which makes it impossible to exit Opera. A reboot is necessary then.
A reboot just for a program! Even if it happens once a week it is too much!
Why is there not a shortcut for exit?

This is the main reason why i mostly use the BB-Browser which is less functional but is not buggy (as Opera Mini 5.1).

@Opera Mini developers: Please fix this bug or, at least, make a shortcut for EXIT (at best without confirm) !!!

EDIT: Oh, i just noticed, that i have the old Opera Mini 5.0 on my BB, and not anymore 5.1 (happened with a Backup i guess) so i cannot say that this bug still exists, most likely it is not anymore with 5.1, like i told before. So i updated immediately and will tell here, if still the bugs appears.
Anyway, i shortcut for EXIT would be very helpful!
