Why does Opera connect to the net when it starts, my homepage is set to opera:about ?

Hi All, as the header, my home page is set to opera:about.
so why does my firewall continually notify me that opera is trying to connect to the internet upon startup?
regards

Log the network traffic yourself, and find out.

Although not very helpful, it's a valid option. If your firewall is incapable of telling you what your connections are doing, then (assuming you are on Windows) you can use Network Monitor, or much more simple Active Ports (among other tools you already have, like for instance cmd.exe netstat -an, tracert, etc)...

If the destination seems odd, or if the port is foreign (ie: not 21, 80, 993, 995, etc)... Google them.

But most likely Opera is doing one of 3 things at start-up, regardless of start-page:
1. Checking to see if it can connect to any sort of network.
2. Checking for updates. (if enabled)
3. Checking mail/RSS (if any)
