Restoring the Default Menus

A signficant issue for many long term Opera users is the loss of the main menu. Although it can be enabled, if it is not, then many of the familiar menus have moved and are difficult to find. The button menu should show the same menu as the main menu bar.

Like many users, I have used a custom button to show the menu for a long time to save the vertical space otherwise taken up by the menu bar. Hiding the menu bar was a good move, but changing the menus themselves was not.

To restore the default menus, edit your custom menu to add this section or replace the existing section with this if it already exists.

[Browser Button Menu Bar]
Include, Browser menu bar

If you don't yet have a customised menu, go to Tools, Preferences, Toolbars, Menu Setup, and Duplicate the existing menu. Rename it to whatever you like. A new standard_menu (1).ini file will have been created in your \profile\menu\ folder. To find it, see Help, About Opera. Close Opera, open this INI file and edit the [Browser Button Menu Bar] section.

Another (slightly easier) solution is to create shortcuts to show each of the menus, such as:

f alt = Show popup menu, "Browser file menu"
v alt = Show popup menu, "Browser view menu"
w alt = Show popup menu, "Browser window menu"

This has the added advantage of enabling the conventional access key shortcuts to the menus. With the browser button menu (the big O menu), one can still use access keys, but one must press and release Alt before pressing the access key. Although this change in behaviour is very minor, it can take some getting used to as it is unlike most other Windows applications.

If you like to try my customised Unite Menu you may get some ideas for making Opera fit your own needs. It removes a lot of rarely used menu items, but keeps frequently used items within easy reach. You can dispense with the mail panel too.

Voted for "A Customized Menu", although I almost never use the menu.

Really wish they would implement a menu editor though, just a simple TreeView, drag&drop, move up/dn, etc, then a fairly simple "Edit" dialog with:
Type: Normal, Submenu, Seperator
Name: The display text
Action: what the menu item does, or links to.

Really don't want to make another crappy little .Net application, lol.
