Opera Mini iPhone redirects....

Hi all,

I was really excited to finally install opera mini on my iPhone, however, once i started surfing my fav websites I found out this things that really buggers me.

Take for example Italian newspaper Repubblica's website www.repubblica.it

if i open that address in Safari it automatically redirects to the iPhone optimized version iphone.repubblica.it/iphone
but if i open it in Opera mini it displays the pc version of the site, while if i enter directly the address "iphone.repubblica.it/iphone" it redirects me to the mobile version m.repubblica.it/mobile ....

That's seriously a bummer, how can i see the iPhone optimized version???

The same thing also happens for other websites, like Yahoo Japan for example...

AFAIK this is an server problem. The server is detecting what browser is running and on what phone. You could try to turn on mobile view on Opera Mini to see if that does anything.

But also a lot of Mini users just want the main site and not a mobile site.
I really hate it when I get a mobile site where I just can't get enough information or news I need.

But he that's me

I tried the mobile view options but it resulted in a simple width shrinking of the PC version.

I see your point, I would just like to be able to choose you know... if there are specifically iPhone (not mobile) optimized versions of websites then why can't I see them?

I've been having the same problem with Mini 5 (Symbian) on my Nokia N85 - most notably (but not exclusively) with the NY Times website. Since Mini 5 went to final release (this did not happen with 4.x or 5 Beta) I am redirected to the full website. When I try looking at specific articles, I sometimes get an error message telling me I am using an old browser that can't display the page properly and I should get Firefox.

This seems to reflect those website techies who have a "mother-knows-best" attitude and won't give us the version of the website the URL we've entered asks for. Even so, since we access sites through Opera's servers (not directly), Opera could (and should) do something so we can get the mobile version if we enter the URL for the mobile version (and the full version if that is the URL we enter).

The link you suggested is for feedback from new iPhone users. Apparently this problem occurs in all versions of Opera 5 Mini. I have a Symbian phone. Unlike OM 4.2 and even OM5 Beta, websites register OM5 as a desktop phone and won't allow access to the mobile website (even when the you use the mobile address). Other websites give you the mobile website only if you enter the mobile address (if there is one). Websites that have a mobile version but not an address for it and redirect phone browsers automatically now won't allow OM5 access to their mobile page displays.

I've gone back to 4.2. If I wanted a desktop web page display on my phone, I'd have gotten Mobile 10. Opera Mini was a great product and they've messed up its basic functionality for a few bells and whistles.
