Native for WM - Constant problems with forums posting

Hey Opera Mini Team

There's constant and ongoing problem with
straightforward posting on forums.

OperaMini keeps reloading pages
deleting the written text

or not accepting PASTED texts, deleting them after reloading.

And now here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=436

On each forum at each post
there are 3 buttons for Quote, Edit and Quick post.

Until today I could normally choose each of the button...

Today all of them are unselectable!

Pressing any of them makes press all of them together.

Is there any chance to sort these problems out?!

You're right about the three links; this doesn't happen in other browsers, but since I can't reproduce that in Mini 5 on other forums with similar buttons, I think the xda-developers site may be at least partly to blame.

BTW, I've always found the xda-developers.com forums very heavy and slow-loading in all the other mobile browsers I've tried -- with the sole exception of UCWEB -- but when I followed your link a few minutes ago, I noticed that Mini 5 loaded it remarkably fast. So despite some well-known and ongoing problems, Opera Mini 5 has its strengths, too -- it's a trade-off.

Also, over the past 16 years, every browser I've ever used, mobile and desktop alike, has had difficulties with some sites.

You are basically right.
I see that also in comparison with Opera Desktop and Internet Explorer...
Both have weaknesses...

Anyway the Xda forums problem appeared JUST yesterday, when last year I had no problem with that.

Well, believe it or not, in addition to the native IE Mobile (which is outdated, and pretty limited), I currently have four other mobile browsers on this WM5 device: The native Mini 5 (didn't like any of the full Opera Mobile versions), Iris Browser 1.1.7, UCWEB 7.0 and Skyfire 1.5. In the past I also tried Mozilla's minimo, but that was worse than all the others and I tossed it.

Why so many browsers? Because there's not a single browser that works well on all sites, or that has all the functions I need. It's a real pain in the butt to keep switching browsers, but I'm gradually getting used to it. I have lots of space for them, too, as they're all running on a 2 gb. SD card. IE, of course, is in ROM, so it takes up no extra space, other than a set of 3rd-party plugins (PIEPlus) that I installed for it.

I've always avoided their site, even though I registered quite some time ago to download some freeware. The site is just too big and awkward to navigate. They offer a mobile version, but it has no search feature, so you're expected to page through dozens, even hundreds of pages to find the post you're looking for.

Ah well...

I think 4 browsers is a bit too much for me...
I rather work on less...

As for XDA, well, this is cruical website for WM development right now....

Well, I see this problem in WM OM5 for not just XDA but any form-submission page. I can't, for instance, log into facebook *at all*. At most sites that require a login, I might have to login twice for the data to get sent. Same with Gmail, if I want to send a mail, I need to hit the send button twice for the message to go thru.

Btw, this doesn't happen with the Java version of OM5.

Anyways, have any of you folks above considered submitting a bug report

I already submitted one weeks ago, and I'm willing to bet that many others did, too. Meanwhile I've stopped using Mini 5 altogether. I'm logging in here with a different browser (Iris at the moment) to follow the developments, if any, in the hope that sooner or later I'll be able to start using Mini again.

Well I've switched back to OM4.2 and - wow - it simply blew me away. The raw speed, sites loading without getting stuck, the size indicator on the progress bar, being able to save files onto the storage card, and more importantly - being able to do form submissions with full confidence!

So what made you decide to try 5 in the first place? I tried several times to get 4.2 running on my WinMo PDA through a Java VM, but finally gave up.

Hmmm ... maybe Opera should have developed a native WM version of Mini 4.2 instead of 5!

Well I didn't know OM5 took so many steps backwards - they never advertised it! wink But the new features are/were quite attractive, something which I've wanted since a few *years* now - for instance - copy-paste and tabbed browsing. Actually, I still need/use these features so I'm running both native OM5 and Java OM4.2 and switch between the two. (Now I have just 6 browsers to choose from when I open a link. Hurray! smile)

As for your Java issue:

Install one of the Java virtual machines listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407667 (20090506.2.1 works well for me; you'll have to scroll down for the mediafire.com link)

Once installed, open IE and head over to http://m.opera.com/mini , choose other, and select the code-signing certificate for 4.2 (All or Verisign works fine), then proceed to download/install 4.2.

Thanks! I tried that with all certificates, and wound up with just a 9.6kb .jad file. The JBed VM wouldn't even run on my device. In fact, its start menu icon was a generic one, indicating that something was missing.

Think I'll just stick to my original plan and wait for improvements to Mini 5. Meanwhile, Iris is running very well on my device, albeit slow, as it does all its rendering locally, no proxy server involved. That rendering, by the way, is exactly like a desktop. Apple WebKit is used for it, and causes my device to be identified by Google and some other sites as an iPhone (it isn't) running Safari (wrong again). lol
