I'll spend my summer in Northern Illinois. Not a bad place, really, and I could spend quite a bit of "off-time" just seeing the county and state parks in the area.
Ever been here? http://www.fpdcc.com/tier3.php?content_id=68&file=map_68j I thought it was quite nice along the trail. Also saw some deer.
I also thought the crabtree forest preserve was quite nice. Saw a couple of deer, a fox, and there were literally hundreds if not thousands of frogs around. It's funny how American frogs actually make a noise that sounds roughly like "ribbit" whereas our frogs sound more like "quahck" (hence they say "kwaak" in Dutch).
This place (north of the road) was also enjoyable. Lots of birds, and just generally a feel that you're really surrounded nature. Lots of those "forest preserves" felt more like parks where they're slightly less bothered about every little detail than in "real" parks. Therefore a lot more enjoyable, but still essentially a park feeling.
The Deer Grove forest preserve was one of the better more park-like ones imo, but it was quite crowded in summer (had a couple of nice walks there in March though, plus I saw an actual wild wolf then... that was kinda creepy).
Anyway, I don't know if you're really nearby any of those, but those'd be my top picks from all the ones I went to. Do with it what you like. ;P
It's really amazing how quiet the relatively small amount of nature you guys get around there is.

That may be the case in Illinois, but part of Californian nature was in my experience filled with noisy and frankly annoying tourists. I have come to the conclusion that American tourists seem overall well-behaved in Europe and Asia, but are a horror in their own country.

Deer are commonplace here.
I saw 20 on the side of the interstate on my drive back from Starkville yesterday.

I saw dead deer on the way from Holland to Detroit on the 96 or something. :/
Anyway, by seeing deer, wolves and foxes "in" the Chicago suburbs I'm apparently ahead in wildlife spotting compared to most locals. Spotting the wildlife in the Chicago suburbs that is, not in spotting wildlife necessarily.

There's like 4 million people living within 20 minutes of the areas I mentioned and the traffic on the roads clearly testifies to this, yet except for the more park-like areas they were practically deserted, and even these park-like areas only had a fairly limited number of people there. You could argue that this was due to the limited parking space (compared to your average store or residential area), except the parking lots always had like 5 cars in tops them (excluding ours) so it didn't exactly make a difference. You could argue it were the hours we were there, but we went after work, or after dinner, or in the weekend, and the situation was always the same.
I'm guessing the people in Cook County and surrounding counties just aren't properly familiar with the nearby stuff and they opt to drive or fly for hours instead to visit well-known tourist "nature" locations...
I've got to say I thought it was quite nice when I lived in Enschede that I could cycle north for a few minutes and be in the middle of abundant forests and everything...

I think they were imported from Europe, unlike the frogs.

I may have to visit those parks someday. As it is, I live within a half mile of the GWT/IPP trail system which is built on a couple of old railroad beds. The Great Western Trail is built on what was the old Great Western roadbed, and the Illinois Prairie Path runs on what used to be the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Interurban road. Combined, they make some eighty miles of hiking and biking trail through western Cook, Dupage and Kane Counties. The western legs of the IPP get pretty badly beaten up by horses which can make bike riding a bit of a challenge, but overall it's not too bad.
Sounds interesting. I don't think I'll be visiting that (or Illinois) anytime soon if only 'cause the planes can't fly
- not visiting this year at any rate. Sounds like you can have some fun there.
Then, to the interior, along the Atlas Mountains, Quarzazate until Ksar es Souk facing the big dunes of the Sahara.
One can't be very rigorous, walker there is no path, you are doing it yourself with your own steps.
Anyway, summer it's not the good season for this little trip.

I took a very similar trajectory about a decade ago, it comes highly recommended. Yes, walking up sand dunes sans camel is strenuous work. (At least I did the journey in February.)

Yuck?
I understand that many Chinese cities are severely affected by smog (which is, of course, worst in summer); in that light, "yuck" seems like a fairly appropriate reaction.
This reminds me of Prague in the days of Czechoslovakia. A standing phrase was "the stench of winter", or to be exact the smell of low-grade brown coal heating Prague homes. After a couple years of transition this coal was banned, and the factories producing nothing but employment and pollution were shut down, while private cars started to make up most of the air pollution instead.

I did a quick search and that came up with http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30476335/ns/us_news-environment/ which seems to confirm that.I have so far failed to find your specific posting, but it was an article about how parents push their children and how some of them are rather obese. It said that cycling or running outside wasn't advised due to the bad air quality.
Some of the inland second- and third-tier cities may still be taken out of London in the late 19th century, but the rust belt in the North-East is changing into a new Detroit, the old belching coal power plants are rapidly replaced by more modern ones, and as raw materials become more expensive the newer production plants have to use them more efficiently, with less pollution as a positive side-effect.

On a lighter note: If I can scare up the money I might visit the Dells. I've been up that way a couple of times and--- if you can avoid the tourist traps-- the Wisconsin Dells has something to offer.
Oh, heck--- I just plain like hill country. The Northwest corner of Illinois-- we call it the Galena Territory-- isn't to be missed if you get out this way.
I had a chance to see parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia the past couple of weeks (job change-- I'm over-the-road now) and if I can scare up money and time there's lots to see and do there.
