This has to do with supporting APIs that accessibilty software (think screenreaders) can use to read what's happening in the browser.

Not quite sure why that should be... Any application you install on your system will be able to do the most awful privacy things, in theory, if it happens to be an evil application. Screen readers are generally not considered evil applications (and neither are browsers).
