Remove Google Search

After several years' worth of unpleasant revelations, I now absolutely distrust Google, and wish to remove it from the search function. However, Google is the ONLY search that will NOT be removed!

This I find quite irritating, and rather inexplicable. Unless Opera is paid for this, in which case I must also mistrust Opera as well. Distressing concept.

Is there any kind of work around which eliminates Google? I mean, I just don't trust them anymore, and want that search function GONE!

I'm using Opera 9.5, Win XP2, and any suggestions would be welcome. I've not come up with anything, being one of the computer semi-literati.

If this cannot be done in Opera, is there another browser nearly so good which will allow removal of Google? I'd switch for that alone.

Opera does get paid for it, although I don't think they get specifically paid for making removing it complicated, that's more of a "safety" feature I think so that searches can be restored easier.

I'm not sure if this pertains to 9.x, but... you should be able to either edit, or delete the search.ini from "..\Program Files\Opera\defaults\*" if it still comes back (or refuses to leave) then also delete it from "..\Program Files\Opera\locale\en\*" (or whatever language you have it set to)

Just make sure you do your editing while Opera is closed.

But really, you shouldn't even have to go that far, just switch your default search engine to something else.

I've removed it just fine. Just now. Opera 10.60

Opera, Mozilla and possibly many other browser developers are all paid by Google (and other search-engines like Yahoo, Bing, Ask, etc.) for search-engine inclusions on install.

If you can't just delete the search engine in the UI (which works for me), try Vectronic's search.ini solution.
