Close button on active tab only (like IE and FF)?

Will this ever happen? There is a way to hack the skin to do it, but it has an unfortunate side-effect: while only the active tab has the X, all the other tabs have a space where the X was, which looks wrong and wastes space.

Various skins have this.

One that doesn't do this (notice the two tabs on the top left, where valuable text space is wasted for a phantom X)?

You would have to click on the tab then click X. On slow computers several seconds would be added by adding another step.

I doubt whether there is a way to set the size of a tab button to hide the close button. When there are many tabs, only the active tab has a close button. Other tabs use the full tab button for words. If we set it to very large, virtually they will always be hidden.

personally -1 for always hiding close buttons for non-active tabs.

Go to preferences - advanced - tabs - additional tab options - then uncheck show close button on each tab.

Yes, I've always done that, but only because there isn't one that only shows it on the active tab.

I don't know about the several seconds (I've never seen any lag at all in switching tabs, and by modern standards I don't have a fast computer), but you would have to click to the tab to close it. That's not a problem for me, however, since the overwhelming majority of the time it's the active tab I want to close. I don't even know what most of the other tabs are without clicking on them first. An icon and 2 or 3 letters is not usually enough for me to know what another tab is.

It would be an option, just as you can have all or nothing now. It would actually give you more clues as to what a given tab is.

That's interesting. Has it always been like that or is it a recent change? With 16 tabs just now, sure enough only one has an X. I'll run with this for a while and see what the threshold is.

Fuck the "x"
Dragging the tab into the page should eliminate it. Right now it refreshes the page.

It should have been there quite a while. I don't remember completely when the behavior changed. That time I was just following the old style without any close button on tab buttons. It should be more or less like someone expressed the inconvenience that the close buttons disallow tab selection on over-crowded tabs. Sometimes later it changed to the current behavior.

If you remove the close button you can still close the tab by middle-clicking it.

This.

PS: Opera already shows close button on active tab only when you have multiple tabs (when you presumably need text space)
