How to make clicking on opera icon open a new window rather than a new tab.

How do I make clicking on opera icon open a new window rather than a new tab. Whatever I select in the options it seems to just open more tabs.

Can anyone help with this?

thanks.

It's fairly easy... simply edit the shortcut, and at the end of it, add "<i>/newwindow</i>" ... for instance on mine it's:
"C:\Program Files\Opera\opera.exe" /newwindow

It works in Linux & Windows (can't test for Mac)

If you want it to always create new window (from other applications, files clicked, etc), you would have to edit your registry (assuming you are on Windows), and insert that into the commands for *.htm *.lnk, etc...

That's great thanks. I got me confused a bit because the last version I had did it automatically.

Actually there are still some things I can't get right. I have removed tabs and am using windows instead. IF I am on a page and for example I go to HELP, ABOUT OPERA, I lose the current page I am on and I can't go back to it. It should be opening in a new window, but I can't get it to.

That's odd... since Opera 10.5, they changed all those so that they <i>would</i> always open in new tabs. You must be using an older version (or possibly an early beta of 10.5).

You should be able to (provided you remember) use Shift+Click to open in new tabs, but I'm pretty sure it will always open in a new tab, rather than a window (for internal pages and stuff, not links... but could be wrong)

Edit: hmm... somewhat unrelated, but "Open windows instead of tabs" seems to be broken... in 10.52 anyways.

Yeh, it's definitely the new version as I downloaded it from the site before the weekend...and yes I think it is broken, so I will have to remember not to click anything that might make me lose my work!

thanks for the help.

What's happening is that it's opening in a new tab in the same window - if you have the tabs toolbar disabled you won't see that your window now has two tabs. But you should be able to close the new tab with Ctrl-F4 and get back to your previous page, which is hidden underneath it.

This is possibly a bug? Help-About and other such internal Opera pages don't respect the "Open windows instead of tabs" setting.
