Slow Action & Program Lock-up

Since installing Opera 10.51 I have experienced extremely slow action, particularly when reading, or composing, Email. The program (not the computer) will hesitate for as long as 15-30 seconds; or it will lock up completely and require terminating it, and re-starting. I have used a Process Tracking utility to determine what else is happening on the computer when Opera locks up, but so far nothing stands out. This has not been a problem with previous Opera versions.

Has anyone had similar problems, or any idea as to what MIGHT be causing this?

BTW, the computer is running WIN98SE, but that shouldn't be a problem, should it?

It might.

What is so slow when composing? Displaying of the characters you type?

What is so slow when reading? Rendering when scrolling?

Opera 10.5x does rendering of the UI differently now. This might not work well on really old hardware.

When composing email, Opera will frequently lock up completely, requiring me to use Alt-Ctrl_Del to end the program, and re-start it. The same thing occurs when scrolling through a list of messages, or when reading a message.

I've ordered another memory chip to increase the system RAM, and I'll see if that makes a difference.

I use Opera on a PIII 700MHz with 256MB of ram, with an old crappy video card and a slow 54000RPM ata33 hard drive and Opera works fine. But, that's on WinXP, so, it could indeed be something to do with Win98.
