10.51 and no access to Mail

I downloaded and setup 10.51 but I can't get access to the Mail client. The left hand side of the screen, when I select the "+" symbol, has the "Mail" selection grayed out. I removed and reloaded teh program but no luck. How do I get the Mail client to work or be available?

Welcome to the My Opera community!

The mail panel will be grayed out till you set up an account. You do that view tools (or O menu) -> Mail and Chat Accounts.

Did you start out with a completely fresh install and fresh profile? Or, did you initially upgrade from an old version of Opera?

It was a fresh install.. Had never used Opera before and running Windows 7. I did finally find the Tool selection only by accident. I had no idea to select the "O" in the upper left hand corner. No where, anywhere, does anything say to select the "O" for access to the toolbar. Maybe someone should consider that? Or is that supposed to be "obvious"? Maybe I'm just a klutz.

On the O menu button, there's a little arrow pointing down on the right-hand side. That's the indicator that if you click the arrow area (or sometimes anywhere on the button, depending on the button), you'll get a menu. (Just like the arrow on the right side of the address field or the arrow and the left side of the search field. etc. etc.)

The O menu should look like a button as opposed to just a flat logo. However, you're not the only one to miss this. Hopefully Opera can make things better in this case.

Anyway, if you click on the O menu and choose "Show Menu bar", you'll get the menu bar showing like you might expect.

On a side, some buttons like the default back and forward buttons have menus too. But, you get to those by left-clicking and holding for a sec. If you press shift + F12, goto buttons and then browser, you'll see other back and forward buttons that have menu indicators.

Also note that on these forums, when someone gives you steps to follow, they may be steps that only make sense when you have the menu bar showing.

Thanks. It looks like I have it running. I had been using Thunderbird for years, but with my upgrade to Windows 7 it has been acting strange. I had always wanted to try Opera, so here I am. So far, so good.

Thanks for your help!

Menu -> Show menu bar, which was the default for years. Now, Opera's trying something new *by default* (like Chrome and Safari). Most seem to love it. Firefox is going to do this too *by default* probably. In any case, you'll always be able to turn the menu bar on if you miss it.

In addition to having the menu indicator on the button, the O menu says "Menu" (in the tooltip) when you hover over it.

You can also get to the menu by pressing alt (which is something Firefox does too when you have the menu hidden).
